Spring Break in Mexico: BE SAFE

Each year during spring break more than 100,000 American teenagers and young adults travel to Mexico. For most students, the vacation is enjoyable and without incident. Unfortunately hundreds will be arrested and even more will make mistakes, most are alcohol related, that could affect them for the rest of their lives.
With spring break quickly approaching (March 9-16, 2008), there are safety measures and general rules you should know. When traveling to Mexico, it is necessary to have two forms of travel documentation. You must have a valid photo I.D. AND one of the following:
A state-issued birth certificate with an affixed seal, or
A naturalization certificate, with a laminated naturalization card, or
A valid U.S. passport (expired passports are not valid)
You are subject to Mexico’s laws and customs regulations. U.S. citizenship does not exempt you from Mexican law. For example, although a U.S. driver’s license is valid in Mexico, the law requires that the vehicle’s owner be inside the vehicle. If not, the vehicle may be seized by Mexican customs.
Mexico imposes harsh penalties for bringing as little as one bullet across the border. Do not carry a pocket knife. A weapons charge can be made if a knife is found on a traveler who is arrested for a separate offense.
If visiting a beach, any warning flags should be taken seriously. When a black or red flag is displayed, do not enter the water. Many beaches, especially along the Pacific, are known to have strong undertow and rough surf.
Too much alcohol and unruly behavior can lead to serious problems. Alcohol is involved in the vast majority of arrests, accidents, violent crimes and deaths suffered by students on Spring Break.
If you plan carefully, exercise caution and keep safety a top priority, spring break in Mexico is a great place to relax and unwind.
Text
message alert system

ASU has launched a new text message alert system.
The text message system is an opt-in service in which
students can choose to receive a text from ASU in
times of an emergency.
This is designed to be used only in the case of a major
emergency event either on one of the ASU campuses or
in the immediate vicinity.
In the case of such an emergency, participants in the
system will receive specific safety information or instructions.
To sign up for ASU's new text message alert system please

Isaac Card Access
The University utilizes electronic door access technology campus-wide, including all residence halls on campus. It’s called ISAAC (Integrated System at ASU for Access Control) and uses the latest iClass proximity/smart card technology. This technology is integrated into the new ASU Sun Cards (the ones with a large gold starburst of the left side of the card).
Students are responsible for all replacement card fees.
Do not punch holes in your Sun Card.
No “tailgating.” As you enter a secure area using your Sun Card, DO NOT let people enter the building with you. If you do, you become responsible for those individuals.
Do not open the door for others. People who do not have access privileges should contact a Residential Life representative to gain entry.
Do not prop doors. Any door left open for an extended amount of time will trigger an alarm. Alarms will not silence until the door is closed.
Emergency exit doors are for emergencies ONLY. Alarms will sound when doors are opened.
Tampering with security equipment may result in Residential Life License Agreement termination. There is a minimum $500 charge for any damage, vandalism or disabling of fire/emergency equipment.
Report all problems with door access to your front desk immediately.
If your card is missing or stolen, you MUST
1) Report it to your hall front desk immediately;
2) AND Call 480-965-CARD or report it online at http://www.suncard1.com
Missing or stolen cards will be deactivated and students must obtain a new Sun Card at the Sun Card office. When you receive a replacement card the new card will be enabled with the same access as the old card.

Already a Flexcar Member?
Current Flexcar members should have received a welcome kit and Zipcard in the mail. To activate your membership, log on to www.zipcar.com/flexcar using your Flexcar member number and PIN. The process is easy and should only take a few minutes. Upon activating your Zipcar account, you will receive a driving credit of $25, which is valid for 60 days. If you have not yet received your welcome kit, please call Zipcar customer service at 866.4ZIPCAR (866.494.7227) or the ASU Commuter Options office at 480.965.1072.
Not a Flexcar Member, But Interested in Joining Zipcar?
It’s easy to do by visiting www.zipcar.com/asu. ASU students, faculty and staff ages 18 and older can join for just $35 a year with no deposit and no monthly commitment. Plus, new customers will receive a $35 driving credit to use in the first month. Zipcar members have access to Zipcars parked on the ASU Tempe campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Low hourly and daily rates, beginning at $9/hour, include ALL expenses; FREE gas, FREE insurance and FREE reserved parking spaces!

Get
Your Flu Shot

The flu season has begun early this
year. At the time of this writing, there have
been 17 documented cases of the flu reported in Arizona
and six of them are from Arizona State University. Campus
Health Service is committed to protecting you from the
seasonal flu, but we need your help.
We have given out a record number of
flu vaccines, but realize this is only still a small
proportion of the students, faculty and staff who are
at risk. We are asking for your help to protect yourself
over this winter break and next spring by following
these simple precautions:
1. Get your flu shot! We still have supply left so stop by any of the Campus
Health Service centers and get vaccinated, and the sooner
the better since it takes two weeks to build up the
body’s immune system.
2. No excuses! CHS is open 10 a.m.
- 4 p.m. during the holiday break.
3. Wash your hands! Carry
with you plenty of alcohol-based instant hand cleaner
and use it frequently. This prevents transmission of
cold and flu germs from person to person.
4. Learn the “Cough/Sneeze
Salute”. When you need to sneeze or cough,
do so into your bent elbow rather than into your hands
which can transmit the flu and cold viruses.
5. Over the counter cold/flu
medicines should be on hand in your classroom,
office, residence hall, apartment or house.
6. Visit www.asu.edu/health call our pharmacy 480-965-3346, or
stop by any of the Campus Health Service locations for
more information on medicines or to get care.
Common Myths and Facts:
“I
can’t get the flu” - Flu is passed from
one person to another by cough or droplet and has about
a 30% rate of passing from one infected person to another.
On average, students/adults who get the flu shot will
miss one less day of school/work than those who do not.
“I
don’t like shots,” - Our nursing staff does
an excellent job of giving these immunizations.
“Can’t
I get the flu from the flu shot?” - You cannot
get the flu from the flu shot as the vaccine in the
flu shot is inactive components not the actual live
virus.
“How
much will it cost?” - $18 for students, $20 for
faculty which will be billed to either their insurance
or to their student account if not covered.

What are Sun Dollars? Sun Dollars are a pre-paid spending program that ASU offers to its students, faculty and staff. Sun Dollars act similar to a pre-paid debit card and can be used on and off campus at select locations. ASU makes it easy for students, faculty and staff to add money to their personal Sun Dollar account at any time. Funds are added to and accessed by the official ASU Identification Card (Sun Card).
On Campus you can buy food, drinks, print, make photocopies, buy textbooks, buy snacks from vending machines and much more.
Off campus you can buy food, textbooks, clothing, medical care, taxi rides and much more.
This semester we have added several new businesses including:
• Chipotle located at the Tempe Marketplace
• Urgent Care on Scottsdale and the 202
