Kendra Hunter, Director of Residential Education
Arizona State University
Before we tell you about the opportunities that could help make you a Sun Devil, it’s important for you to know about us, who Residential Life is at Arizona State University at the Tempe campus. The information we present below is meant to help you see who we are and what guides us in our daily practice of helping students succeed and also to inform you as to where we are headed in the future.
Vision
To be the premier housing and academic support services program in the nation.
ASU Residential Life currently houses 7,000 plus students in 19 residence halls and 2 apartment communities. We are a growing and changing department that isn’t afraid to try new processes and procedures to better meet the needs of the students. Residential Life has built strong partnerships with Student Engagement, Counseling & Consultation, Athletics, Wellness and Health Promotions, ASU Police, Sun Devil Dining, Student Judicial Affairs and Multicultural Student Services to bring services and engagement to our residential neighborhoods.
Core Values
Department Units
Residential Education
The Residential Education unit is where you will find our residence halls and the paraprofessional and professional staff that oversee the daily operations of each hall.
Residential Education Mission
We facilitate the holistic development of residential students and engage them in the ASU experience by cultivating inclusive communities, promoting involvement and leadership opportunities, and intentionally connecting students to campus resources, thereby contributing to their retention and persistence to graduation.
Diversity Statement & Goals
Residential Education recognizes and celebrates the diversity within our student body. We strive to present an inclusive environment which welcomes and values all members who live and work in our residential communities regardless of their religion, ability, color, creed, cultural background, ethnicity, gender identity, national origin, race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status or any other self-expression.
Residential Education supports ASU Residential Life’s commitment in providing a hospitable and inclusive environment for students and staff. Additionally, Residential Education promotes programs and services that enhance the quality of life; facilitate logical, just, and personal development; and develop a culture which stimulates reverence for all human diversity for residents and staff.
Residential Neighborhoods
A campus of 64,000 plus students can feel quite large
and could leave many students, especially first year students, feeling
overwhelmed and lost. In recognizing this and wanting to create a
smaller campus feel, Residential Life implemented “residential
neighborhoods.”
Each residential neighborhood consists of 5-10 residence halls of varying sizes. To better meet the needs of the residents in each neighborhood, the partnerships that Residential Life has created with varying Student Affairs offices such as Student Engagement, Counseling & Consultation, Multicultural Student Services, and Wellness & Health Promotions to name a few, have each assigned a different staff representative to work with each neighborhood. These representatives often have offices located in their respective neighborhoods and will work with Residential Life staff members to implement proactive services and/or programs to address the needs of students or provide assistance with current situations.
With the neighborhood concept and services being brought to the residential communities, the campus can feel smaller for residents and services made more readily accessible.

20/20 Facility Plan
Vision 2020 is a new way of planning and thinking for our residential facilities. It is the message that we are investing in our facilities for student success. The intent of the plan is to systematically incorporate capital improvements for the next 13-years to the year 2020 for our residential facilities. We need to have high quality residential living because we realize that the quality of life residents experience while living on campus does impact their decision to remain on campus and at Arizona State University.
This plan not only impacts the overall satisfaction of the resident experience, but also that of our staff. The 20/20 Facility Plan also takes into account the investment in providing quality accommodations to the hard working and dedicated live-in staff that ensure student success.
Vista del Sol
In order to provide more accommodations for students who are sophomores and above, ASU Residential Life has partnered with American Campus Communities to build a new apartment complex that will consist of 10 residential buildings and a 23,000-square-foot, two-story community center featuring a club-style fitness center, social lounge, game room, theater, and study rooms. Outside amenities will include a pool and sundeck, a basketball sport court, and surface and structured parking.
All units will be fully furnished and will feature predominately private-bedroom and bathroom accommodations, fully equipped kitchens, washer and dryers, and high-speed internet. Vista del Sol will include a student-oriented retail component with space for a restaurant, clothing retailers, and a coffee shop. This dynamic new community is scheduled to open in fall 2008.
Cross-Functional Teams
The success and direction of Residential Life does not rest solely with a small group of people, it is impacted by all within the department. In the implementation of cross-functional teams, representatives from each unit in Residential Life form teams, or “think tanks”, whose missions are geared towards making recommendations on ways to enhance and advance the operation of Residential Life in order to meet our goals. The cross-functional teams for the 2007-2008 year are:
First Year Residential Experience (FYRE)
