Community Assistants (CAs)

Arizona State University residences halls are a place to live, grow, succeed, develop friendships, and experience college life! Community Assistants (CAs) play a vital role in developing and maintaining this atmosphere of academic, personal and social growth. Community Assistants are qualified and experienced Arizona State University students who live on every floor, section or wing throughout the residence halls. They assist students with their transition to college by serving as mentors and friends during the academic year. CAs organize hall meetings and activities, inform residents of events taking place within the campus community and create a special bond and a sense of belonging for students. Community Assistants are dedicated and enthusiastic about being an important part in the transition to everyday student life.

What do Community Assistants do?

  • Build and lead a community of peers by being available and accessible to residents
  • Connect peers to educational, social and cultural activities
  • Check-in and check-out paperwork
  • Address policy violations
  • Crisis intervention
  • Night/weekend community walks
  • Work a weekly shift at 24 hour hall desk
  • Attend required staff meetings and training sessions
  • Encourage and support student involvement in Hall Council
  • Serve as a academic and social role model, friend, confidant, and resource for a diverse group of students

Requirements

  • All Community Assistants must have a minimum cumulative and semester GPA of 2.75 at time of application and while holding the position.
  • ASU Downtown Campus and Living and Learning Community Community Assistant must have a 3.0 at time of application and while holding the position.
  • Current ASU students must have completed 24 ASU credits
  • Transfer Students must have completed 6 ASU and 18 transfer credits to begin position
  • Undergraduate students must be enrolled full-time (12 hours), at the Tempe campus.
  • Downtown Community Assistants must be enrolled full-time (12 hours), at ASU. The majority of course credit hours must be taken on the Down town Campus.
  • Graduate students must be enrolled in 6 hours while as an CA.
  • Work no more than 10 hours at another job outside of Residential Life
  • CAs should not take more than 17 credit hours per semester (a lighter load is recommended due to the time commitment of the position.)
  • Accept employment for a nine month period beginning in early August with training and concluding soon after the halls close at the end of Spring semester in May
  • Must also be in good standing with Residential Life and Student Life

One who possesses all of the requirements as well as the following:

  • Possesses great communication skills
  • Can take charge in situations that may arise in their hall
  • A great team player
  • Is personable and can set a positive environment for their assigned hall
  • Ability to time manage and multi-task

  • Starting stipend of $350.00 each semester and increases with years of service.

Recruitment Process:

Interested applicants need to complete and submit a Community Assistant Application. Applicants should reference the checklists that are included in the downloadable application. The completed application should be submitted to the Residential Life office located in the Student Services Building, room 170. Positions are available in most of the residence halls. Selection process

The selection process for fall positions take place each year in January ending in April. April is when candidates are notified of their selection status for the following academic year. We may also conduct smaller selection processes for our available spring and summer positions. Training

Community Assistant training consists of two-week training (in August) and two to four days training (in spring). There are also leadership conference trainings that occur throughout your experience as an CA.

Our extensive training program will challenge you and teach you what you need to know to excel. Community Assistants are trained in the areas of:

  • Time Management
  • Counseling/Conflict Mediation
  • Leadership Styles
