From event planning to student services and involvement opportunities, the Memorial Union serves as the campus community center for Arizona State University. In addition to programs providing educational, cultural, recreational, and social experiences, the Memorial Union recognizes the importance of the visual arts to the community.
Due to the damage incurred by the fire on November 1, 2007, the newly founded Memorial Union Art Committee had the opportunity to reevaluate the way in which the art portrayed both the collegiate focus of the Memorial Union along with its distinct southwestern surroundings. With these elements in mind, the MU Art Committee strove to create a balance to the Memorial Union’s uniqueness and importance to the ASU community by redefining visually stimulating spaces.
The Memorial Union’s Permanent Art Collection is composed of paintings, photographs, sculptures and tapestries created by students, faculty and alumni from ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, as well as other recognized artists such as Jack Breckenridge, Lew Davis, R.C. Gorman and Merrill Mahaffey. The Memorial Union acquired these works through selected purchases and as generous donation gifts. The collection is located throughout all four floors of the Memorial Union. Members of the public interested in donating art to the Memorial Union should contact the Art Collection Managers below for more information.
