General InformationThe Native American Achievement Program, within the Multicultural Student Center, is a specialized program primarily designed to increase the persistence and graduation rates of Native American students from the Navajo Nation, San Carlos Apache Tribe, and the White Mountain Apache Tribe. ASU/Tribal AgreementArizona State University (ASU) entered into an intergovernmental agreement with the Navajo Nation, San Carlos Apache Tribe, and the White Mountain Apache Tribe to foster academic and personal success by providing academic support services to first-time freshmen and sophomores attending ASU. The tribes provide financial aid and require their students to participate in the NAAP. The tribes are responsible for determining eligibility criteria, selection and award of students. ASU provides the academic and personal success support. The student's tribal scholarship is disbursed in three payments throughout the semester contingent upon their satisfactory participation or completion of the NAAP requirements. Expectations of StudentsEach NAAP participant signs a Student Agreement to accept the terms of the program. NAAP requirements include an on-campus orientation at the begining of each semester; monthly meetings with NAAP staff; periodic meetings with instructors/ academic advisors; attend workshops; participate in social activities; and attend a recognition banquet at the end of the year. The freshmen or first-year NAAP students work with the Multicultural Student Center staff and the second-year NAAP students work with the American Indian Institute. Students are expected to remain in good academic and financial aid standing per their respective tribal and other financial aid. In all cases, NAAP students are expected to fully participate in the program Academic and Personal Success SupportIn partnership with Native American tribes, the Native American Achievement Program (NAAP) supports, guides, and encourages Native American students to successfully achieve academic goals, foster career goals, attain leadership skills, and develop personal life skills.
