First Year Residential Experience (FYRE) is a residential community designed to support students in their first year of university life. Housing approximately 4,700 of ASU’s students, our primary objective is to assist first-year residential students in having a successful transition from high school to college. FYRE is an interdisciplinary community serving students with a broad range of academic interests and majors. FYRE staff work with university partners to create a comprehensive experience combining community activities with enhanced academic support. This program is built around five intentional goals to assist first-year residential students with:
Participation in the FYRE experience will promote a foundation for academic success and a strong connection to community; ensuring that first-year students are successfully integrated into the ASU community.
FYRE offers a series of workshops to present first-year students with an emphasis on resources and success strategies to assist students at ASU. Workshops are free and open to everyone. Click on the titles below to find the dates, times, and locations for workshops this semester.
Workshops on topics:
FYREside chats provide a forum for intellectual peer engagement. Students discuss current events, explore recommendations for change, and utilize conversations for self reflection and growth. FYREside chats promote educational conversations around variety of topics such as diversity, relationships, academics, mental health, and drugs/alcohol, as well as current events influencing the ASU student body. Each chat session will have a facilitator present to process and oversee peer discussions. FYREside chats are a time for students to speak what’s on their mind and an opportunity to learn from others, all the while in the comforts of home – your Palo Verde East Hub.
The WoW Series provides weekly opportunities for residents living in FYRE halls to learn about student organizations and campus involvement opportunities. Each Wednesday student organizations are invited to host an information table in the various lobbies of FYRE halls to promote their purpose, upcoming events, and goals. The WoW Series offers a great way for first-year students to learn about the many student involvement organizations on campus, and also serves as an excellent opportunity for student organizations to recruit new members. Check out the WoW Series and see what’s going on each Wednesday in your hall.
FYRE Fellows play an important role in assisting first-year residential students in having a successful transition from high school to college.
Serving as a peer advocate, leader, and resource referral for first-year students, Fellows work closely with Community Assistants and other student leaders to create a holistic experience for students living in their residential community.
As the primary presenter of Success Workshops, Fellows are key players in bridging the gap between campus life and academic support in the FYRE community. Fellows work to create resources and academic support, assist students in navigating the university and making connections at ASU.
