Tutoring

Our Tutoring Philosophy
Learning Support Services (LSS) tutors help students learn how to learn through the use of Socratic method, learning-style preferences, and study strategies and techniques specific to subjects that help to reinforce course content.  We employ peer tutors, students like those whom they tutor, to create a comfortable peer-learning environment for students.

Our Tutors
LSS tutors are ASU students who meet the following requirements:
Minimum 3.0 GPAs, with minimum 3.5 GPAs in their subject areas
Sophomore or higher standing
Content knowledge of tutoring subjects verified by ASU faculty
Successful completion of training that is part of the LSS tutor certification from the College Reading and Learning Association, a national organization of learning assistance professionals
We encourage tutor recommendations from ASU faculty

Benefits of Tutoring
Tutoring supplements and reinforces classroom learning.
Tutoring allows students to practice course material, actively engaging in the learning process.
Tutoring provides opportunities for students to collaborate with their peers.
Tutoring enables students to review material in a group setting, reinforcing what they’ve learned in the classroom.
Tutors help students learn how to proofread and edit their own papers and how to check their own work.
Tutors model and emphasize sound academic practices, including attending class, keeping up with coursework, and developing working relationships with their professors.

Academic Coaching

Our Coaching Philosophy
The nationally certified Academic Coaching program provides students with proven strategies and a supportive environment that can help them perform better on exams, improve their study habits, and manage the demands of university life. Students work with a coach to customize their academic success plan and meet weekly to track progress and stay focused on goals.

Our Academic Coaches
Academic coaches are ASU students who maintain a 3.3 overall GPA, are sophomores or higher in standing and have a demonstrated ability to successfully balance school, work and social activities. Coaches complete 16 hours of certification training prior to working with students and are trained to facilitate academic workshops on the following topics:

  • Time Management
  • Study Skills & Learning Styles
  • Note-Taking
  • Textbook Reading
  • Test-Prep and Test-Anxiety
  • Managing Burnout
  • Math Anxiety

Benefits of Academic Coaching:

  • Improve time management & organization while reducing procrastination.
  • Learn how to retain more information from textbooks and lectures.
  • Reduce test-anxiety and improve performance on exams.
  • Improve study habits by discovering individual learning styles.
  • Recognize the signs of stress and learn how to avoid burnout.
  • Achieve a successful school, work and life balance.
Software Training

Our Philosophy
Learning Resource Centers at ASU offer software workshops and individual sessions designed to support students’ academic work. Whether they need to learn to write formulas in Excel, develop a presentation in PowerPoint or spend less time formatting Word documents, LSS can help. We believe that limited software experience should not stand in the way of any student’s academic success.

Our Software Specialists
Each LSS Software Specialist is comfortable with at least three contemporary programs and can offer individual assistance in those areas. After a semester of observing, assisting, and rehearsing software workshop lesson plans, they may become Software Training Specialists who present workshops. By working with a Software Specialist or Software Training Specialist, students can learn a new program or more about software they use every day.

Workshop topics
The Big Five workshop series is presented every semester and consists of

  • Dreamweaver Basics
  • Excel Formulas and Functions
  • MS Word Tips and Tricks for College
  • PowerPoint Basics
  • Thesis Formatting with Word

In addition, LSS offers individual sessions and custom workshops in

  • Access
  • Graphs in Excel and PowerPoint
  • Internet Research
  • myASU/Blackboard
  • Photoshop
  • Publisher
