March 2008 Immunizations and Health InsuranceDear Entering ASU Students and Parent: Please review your immunization records with your physician and bring a copy of your immunizations with you to campus. The following is a checklist of vaccines recommended for college students: Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR): ASU requires that all students show proof of two MMR immunizations (one which must be given after 1979) or a blood test documenting immunity prior to registering for classes. Meningitis (Meningococcal) Vaccine: If you are a freshman and will be living in a residence hall, this vaccine is strongly recommended. Hepatitis B Vaccine: Hepatitis B is a viral infection that can damage your liver and cause liver cancer. There are 240,000 new cases of this illness each year in the U.S. and since the virus is highly infectious (even more so than HIV), the illness can be readily transmitted to others. Tetanus: A tetanus booster should be obtained every 10 years. You may obtain any of these immunizations from the ASU Campus Health Service. The Service is open to all ASU students and is located on Palm Walk and University Drive. Our current charges for each of the vaccines with the visit fee are: Health Insurance: All students are encouraged to obtain health insurance to cover unexpected medical expenses. ASU students are eligible to purchase a major medical insurance plan. Under this plan, the doctors at the Campus Health Service serve as primary care providers and the referral source for hospitalization and specialty care. ASU also offers a supplemental health plan for students called the Bridge Plan that covers all lab, x-ray and physician visits when these services are obtained at the Campus Health Service. The cost of the Bridge Plan is only $96.00 per semester. Students on both these two plans also have access to after hours telephone advice from our medical staff. For additional information about the Student Health Insurance and Bridge Plan, please access our web site at www.asu.edu/health or call (480) 965-2411.
