The entire staff of the International Student Office (ISO) would like to welcome new and continuing students as you begin the Fall 2007 semester. Please take a moment to read all ISO Messages we will send you from hereon. It is of utmost importance to review deadlines and plan ahead according to your individual circumstances to avoid immigration/visa problems. We highly recommend that you print a copy of the emails for future reference.
ISO Matters
1. If you need any immigration related information or advisement it is highly recommended that you email isoeadvisor@asu.edu first before making an appointment. Emails are responded to between 1-3 working days. You will be directed to meet an advisor if necessary.
2. The processing time at the ISO for an I-20 signature, letter of certification or other routine document is 10-14 full working days. Other document requests and transactions may require more time. Incomplete documents will not be processed and will take more time. Please plan accordingly.

ENROLLMENT ADVISORY
Improtant! By August 26th, the published drop-add deadline students be enrolled full-time! Students not enrolled in a full course of study by this date without prior ISO authorization or who withdraw from class/es without contacting the ISO will be placed on administrative hold to prevent future registration at ASU and SEVIS record will be TERMINATED for failure to maintain status. Terminated records are subject to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement review which could result to deportation.
1. Students must be registered full-time at all times. Full-time is 12 credit hrs for undergraduates/ 9 credit hrs for graduates or 6 credit hrs with an assistantship (unless the department or college requires more).
2. No more than 3 credit hrs from any online/distance learning course may be applied towards the full-time requirement each semester.

These forms often also require faculty and/or advisor signature so please plan accordingly.

To facilitate this, students must bring to the ISO copies of their validated I-20/DS-2019, I-94 card, passport pages with name, photo and expiration date, US visa and print-outs of the updated local address and immigration information pages from the ASU Interactive website http://www.asu.edu/sos/

3. J1 students must report to the Alternate Responsible Officer/Responsible Officer who signed their respective DS-2019 for SEVIS program validation.
4. All continuing students who have continually maintained full-time status will be automatically registered in SEVIS for Fall 2007 semester. There is NO NEED to report to the ISO for this transaction.
5. SEVIS registration verifies maintenance of student status. Failure to maintain student status at the time of SEVIS registration will cause you to be terminated in SEVIS. For complete information about maintaining your visa status, please refer to p. 2 of your I-20/DS-2019 or visit the ISO website at www.asu.edu/iso
6. Periodic reporting to SEVIS occurs for the following events: dropping below full-time without ISO authorization, personal biographical information changes, address information changes, degree level and program changes.

3. If you have changed majors or degree options within your program i.e. MS to MCS or pursuing another/higher degree this Fall 2007 semester, please send an email to isoeadvisor@asu.edu so we can verify if the change has affected your status and/or if you need to request for an I-20/DS-2019 update.
4. Students who have pre-approved insurance coverage through their government or official sponsor must request, obtain and submit an insurance waiver to Campus Health Service every semester no later than two weeks after classes start to avoid paying the ASU insurance.

2007 semester or Summer 2007 session who want to apply for the
Optional Practical Training (OPT) benefit must apply prior to
their completion date to get the full 12 months of OPT. Deadline
to submit OPT application to the ISO is 3 weeks prior to completion
date. Failure to meet the deadlines will result in, without
exception, the loss of your OPT benefit.
Students who do not complete their program
as reported on the completion of coursework form or any other
reason must report to the ISO prior to the completion date for
appropriate advisement. Failure to do so will cause loss of
F-1 status and consequently, loss of the OPT benefit.
Upon completion of studies, F-1 students must
be in one of the following situations:
- Must have already applied for OPT.
- Admitted to a new program at ASU or other institution.
If you intend to enter another degree program here at ASU,
you must come to the ISO to request an I-20 reflecting the
new program. If you transfer to some other institution,
you must contact the ISO for SEVIS transfer process information.
- Applied for change to another status. If you have received
a Notice of Action from USCIS regarding a change of your
immigration status, please contact the ISO immediately to
get your record updated in SEVIS.
Important! If NOT in any of the above situations,
students must depart the USA within 60 days.
Important Notes:
- After completion of studies, you are not allowed to continue
to work on campus as a student. Any employment as a student
after degree completion is considered unauthorized and will
jeopardize your immigration status.
- Graduating students are advised to keep their immigration
documents indefinitely. After you leave the University,
the ISO keeps your file for a limited period only and will
not be able to assist with requests for documents or verification
of student status after files have been destroyed.

WEST
CAMPUS VISA AND IMMIGRATION SERVICE
Dear International Students at the West campus,
I wanted to send a message to you through the
ISO to let you know that I will no longer serve as the Designated
School Official (DSO) of the West campus. Being the West
campus' Designated School Official has given me the honor of
meeting all of you.
As of March 1, 2007, all degree-seeking
international students at the West campus will be required to
contact the International Student Office (ISO) at the Tempe
campus for questions and service regarding your student visa.
The ISO is pleased to now serve all international students on
the four ASU campuses. You should already know the ISO
because you receive the ISO emails periodically reminding you
about immigration updates, reporting requirements and programming
opportunities. Please consult with only the ISO staff
at the Tempe campus regarding your international student status
because they serve as your DSO for all SEVIS related matters
at ASU.
You may contact the ISO in numerous ways to
ensure that you continue to receive the high-quality seamless
service that you are used to receiving:
By email: Contact ISO by sending
an email to isoeadvisor@asu.edu.
Please be assured that the majority of communication may usually
be completed over email and only more complex issues may require
a follow up phone discussion or an in-person visit or appointment.
Most of the information about your rights and responsibilities
as an international student can be found on the international
student portal at www.asu.edu/international
or on the ISO website at: www.asu.edu/iso.
By phone: Call the ISO at
(480) 965-7451 or from a campus phone on the West campus by
simply dialing 5-7451. Depending on the complexity of
your question or request, you may be referred back to send an
email to the isoeadvisor@asu.edu
to facilitate appropriate response.
In person: The ISO office
is located on the second floor of the Student Services Building
in room 265. The office is open Monday to Friday from
8:00 am to 5:00 pm. For information about round trip shuttle
service between West and Tempe campuses, please refer to the
following site: http://www.asu.edu/dps/pts/west.html.
It is suggested that you email or phone before going to campus
to inquire about what services you need and minimize the impact
of your travels back and forth.
I have enjoyed serving all of you over the
years and I wish you success in all your endeavors. Thank
you for allowing me to assist you.
Marge Williams, M.Ed.

WELCOME
The entire staffs of the International Student Office (ISO)
at the Tempe campus and International Student Services (ISS)
at the West Campus would like to welcome new and continuing
students as you begin the Spring 2007 semester. Throughout the
year, you will receive emails from the ISO. Please take a moment
to read all messages we send you. It is of utmost importance
to review deadlines and plan ahead according to your individual
circumstances to avoid immigration/visa problems and ensure
you can be successful as a student at ASU. We highly recommend
that you print a copy of the emails for future reference.
ISO MATTERS
1. If you need any immigration related information
or advisement it is highly recommended that you email isoeadvisor@asu.edu
first before making an appointment. Some matters may be resolved
via email. You will be directed to meet an advisor if necessary.
2. Please remember to always check your ASU email account to
watch for future immigration updates and programming announcements
from the ISO.
3. The processing time at the ISO/ISS for any document/form
signature request is 7-10 full working days. Other requests
may take more time so please plan accordingly.
SEVIS COMPLIANCE Information for F-1
and J-1 students

AUDIT GRADES are not counted and only 3 ONLINE COURSE CREDITS
can be counted towards full-time enrollment.

2. ALL NEW & TRANSFER students must report to the ISO/ISS for
SEVIS initial registration processing. DEADLINE to report to
the ISO/ISS for SEVIS registration is January 19th 2007. Failure

3. Check the expiration date listed on your I-20/DS-2019. You
must file a request for an extension at the ISO/ISS before your
immigration document expires. Failure to do so will cause loss

(i.e. switched degree options, major change) must report to
the ISO/ISS for immigration advisement as soon as possible.
The impact of the change may cause you to lose your F-1 status

Online Services within 10 days. Use your home in Tempe/Phoenix
area as your LOCAL address and your home country residence as

SEVIS record will be TERMINATED.
TERMINATED SEVIS RECORDS are subject to US Immigration and Customs
Enforcement review which could result to detainment and deportation.
For further information, send an email to ISOeadvisor@asu.edu
and we would be happy to assist.
