Message from ISO: Career Services-ISO Initiative (9/22/2006)

JUMP-START YOUR CAREER PLANNING AND JOB SEARCH!

ISO highly recommends that all international students who are planning to complete an internship or find employment in the United States, meet with Career Services to get assistance and discuss special requirements and aspects of the job search to be aware of.

Like any other aspect of life, planning for a career and searching for a job are influenced by culture. It influences the way we network, write resumes, interview and even how we conduct ourselves around possible employers. You will find that there is a lot of incomplete or conflicting information in books or on websites regarding these topics.

In an effort to provide better service to international students in the areas of career advisement and job search, the International Student Office is partnering with ASU Career Services and will offer Career Advisement with Linda Nassen, Career Services Specialist Senior. Linda will be available for appointments and walk-ins at the ISO. During her sessions you will have the opportunity to:

  • Get handouts regarding choosing majors, job search, resume writing and workshops.
  • Briefly address non-personal career/job search questions in a non-private environment.
  • Recommend additional courses of action and refer you to Career Services personnel for follow-up and discussion of personal career/job search questions.
  • Provide information about additional career advisement/ job search workshops and events hosted by Career Services.

Appointments are available on Monday mornings between 10 a.m. and 12 noon. To schedule a time, call the ISO at 480-965-7451.

Don’t wait any longer! Start planning today!

Greetings from the ISO!

As we approach the end of the Spring Semester, the staff of the International Student Office wishes you success in your finals and other academic endeavors. We appreciate your attendance at Arizona State University and consider it a privilege to have worked with you. If you are completing your studies and moving on from ASU, we congratulate you on your achievements. To the continuing students, congratulations for the successful completion of this semester- we look forward to your return!
To ensure you receive updated immigration information from the ISO throughout the summer please check your ASU email account periodically. Below are important reminders. PRINT A COPY for your reference.

A. INFORMATION FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS

1. Students completing their program this Spring 2006 semester who want to apply for the Optional Practical Training (OPT) benefit must apply at least 90 days prior to the completion date to get the full 12 months of OPT. Deadline to apply for OPT is 3 weeks prior to completion date to the ISO. The OPT application must be received by the USCIS before COMPLETION of degree program. Failure to meet the deadlines will result in the loss of your OPT benefit.

2. After completion of studies, F-1 students must be in one of the following situations:
- must have already applied for OPT
- admitted to a new program at ASU or other institution
- applied for change to another status
If not in any of the above situations, students must depart the USA within 60 days.

3. J-1 students have 30 days to enter a new program, start Academic Training or depart the US.

4. After completion of studies, you are not allowed to continue to work on campus as a student. Any employment after degree completion is considered unauthorized and will jeopardize your immigration status.

5. If you intend to enter another degree program here at ASU, you must come to the ISO to request an I-20 reflecting the new program.

6. If you transfer to some other institution, you must contact the ISO for SEVIS transfer process information.

7. If you have received a Notice of Action from USCIS regarding a change of your immigration status, please contact the ISO immediately to get your record updated in SEVIS.

8. Graduating students are advised to keep their immigration documents indefinitely. After you leave the University, the ISO keeps your file for a limited period only and will not be able to assist with requests for documents or verification of student status after files have been discarded.

B. INFORMATION FOR CONTINUING STUDENTS

1. Students who have made any change to their academic programs, (i.e. switched degree options) must report to the ISO for immigration advisement as soon as possible. The impact of the change may cause you to lose your F-1 status.

2. OPT students who did not complete as reported on the completion of coursework form or any other reason must report to the ISO prior to the completion date for appropriate advisement. Failure to do so will cause loss of F-1 status and consequently, loss of the OPT benefit.

3. F-1 or J-1 students who are getting close to the expiration date listed on their I-20 or DS-2019 must file a request for an extension at the ISO before your immigration document expires. Failure to do so will cause loss of F-1 status.

4. Students who are on administrative hold will not be able to register for classes for Fall 2006 semester. If you discover you have an administrative hold in your record, email isoeadvisor@asu.edu with your situation. The hold will be taken off after your status has been cleared by the ISO.

5. AUDIT grades are not counted towards full-time enrollment.

6. No more than 3 credit hrs from any online/distance learning course may be applied towards the full-time requirement each semester.

Message from ISO: Programming Update-Taxes (01/27/2006)

TAX INFORMATION

  • All students and dependents in F/J status must complete and submit tax forms if you were in the USA for any part of 2005.
  • All F-1 and J-1 students who were employed by ASU for any part of 2005 have received W-2 forms from Human Resources. This form is a necessary document when you file your 2005 taxes.
  • Besides being a legal requirement, it is often to your advantage to file a tax return, as some of your wages were withheld and may be refunded to you.
  • Please determine what category you belong in from the choices below and file the appropriate forms accordingly:
  1. If you had no income from U.S. sources in 2005, then you need only file the IRS form 8843 by April 17, 2006
  2. If you earned U.S. income in 2005, you need to file the IRS forms 8843 and 1040 NR or 1040 NR-EZ by April 17, 2006. You will also need to file a tax return for every state that you earned income in. In Arizona you will file with the Arizona Department of Revenue form 140 NR.
  3. Those who will not claim dependents and whose only US income is from wages, tips or grants may use the 1040 NR-EZ form. Read the cover of the form instructions for a detailed list of who can use this form. All other F/J status students with US income must use the 1040 NR.
    • The forms 1040 NR or 1040 NR-EZ and form 8843 can be downloaded from the IRS website: http://www.irs.gov/index.html. Hard copies of the forms 1040 NR and 1040 NR-EZ are also available at Human Resources on-campus, USB building.  Hard copies of all IRS forms including 8843 are available at the IRS office at 40 W. Baseline in Tempe.
    • The form 140 NR can be downloaded from the ADR website: http://www.revenue.state.az.us/  and is available at the Arizona Department of Revenue office at 1600 W. Monroe in Phoenix.

The ASU Law School in cooperation with the VITA program has arranged for volunteers to help international students fill out and file tax forms or answer tax related questions.

VITA- help is available from February 13, 2006 to April 11, 2006 Monday and Tuesday nights from 6pm to 10pm in the MU. When you go to a session, go to the MU information desk and ask for the room assignment for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance session on that day.

PLEASE COME EARLY! Arrive no later than one hour before the end of the session. Bring your immigration documents (I-20/DS-2019, passport, I-94) and all tax documents you have received regarding scholarship, employment (including W-2) or interest income. If you earned money outside of Arizona, please bring the tax forms from each state you earned money in, as they will not have those forms on hand.

  • The ISO cannot address further taxation issues. Please attend a VITA session to get that information or contact the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040.
