Critical Incident Response Guidelines

Threats or Acts of Violence (Mandatory Reporting)

To get help in the event a student reports an incident involving threats or acts of violence:

1 Public Safety

ASU Police
911 (life-threatening or urgent)
(480) 965-3456 (not life-threatening and not urgent)
24 Hours

Secures emergency mental health/medical treatment for affected party, as needed.

Interviews the affected party if they choose to file a police report.

Initiates criminal investigation, if appropriate.

If the alleged perpetrator is an ASU student: ASU Police coordinates with Student Judicial Affairs if the affected party chooses to file a student conduct complaint and the incident occurred on campus or otherwise within the jurisdiction of ASU to initiate threat assessment and interim action, if appropriate. (Note: a student conduct may be filed complaint without filing a police report).

If the alleged perpetrator is an ASU employee: ASU Police coordinates with the Office of General Counsel, Employee Assistance Office, and employee’s supervisor for response including threat assessment or removal, if appropriate.

Coordinates with ASU Police to initiate threat assessment and interim action, if appropriate, and adjudicates student conduct complaints if the alleged perpetrator is an ASU student.

Reporting violations and suspected violations of STA Policy 104-2, Handling Disruptive, Threatening, or Violent Individuals on Campus, to ASU Police, the Dean of Students office, and other appropriate offices is MANDATORY.

 

2 Psychological Support

Counseling & Consultation

After hours and weekends: C&C may be contacted via ASU Police. Call 911 or (480) 965-3456

Provides individual or group support to the affected student(s), including roommates, friends, significant others.

Provides evaluation and/or appropriate follow-up/referrals to other campus and community resources.

Provides support to affected student groups to help them discuss their reactions (critical incident debriefing).

3 University Support

Provides assistance to student(s), including roommates, friends, significant others regarding: absence letters, attendance/enrollment options, and information and referrals to campus and community resources.
