Critical Incident Response Guidelines

Student Death

To get help in the event of a student's death:

1 Public Safety

ASU Police
911 (life-threatening or urgent)
(480) 965-3456 (not life-threatening and not urgent)
24 Hours

Facilitates on-site emergency services and follow-up.

Contacts (or facilitates contact with) next of kin/immediate family of the deceased student.

 

2 Psychological Support

Counseling & Consultation

M-F 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
After hours and weekends: C&C may be contacted via ASU Police. Call 911 or (480) 965-3456

Accompanies ASU Police officer in cases of death notification when immediate support is indicated.

Provides individual psychological support to student(s) including roommates, friends, significant others.

Provides support to groups of affected students in helping them discuss their reactions (critical incident debriefing).

 

3 University Support

M-F 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

After next of kin/immediate family have been notified via ASU Police, Dean of Students contacts next of kin/immediate family to: offer condolences on behalf of the university and provide relevant assistance (e.g., campus processes and personal needs such as financial aid issues, accessing student’s personal belongings, tuition refunds).

Provides assistance to student(s) including roommates, friends, significant others with absence letters and academic options.

Notifies appropriate university offices (e.g., academic dean’s office, University Registrar’s Office, student’s instructors, Student Financial Assistance, Student Business Services, Parking Services).
