Networking letters

Use this type when you are referred or recommended to contact a specific person within the organization:

  • Opening Paragraph: Identifies the person who referred you and why. States your purpose for writing. If it’s for an informational interview, lets your reader know you’re seeking career-related information only.
  • Middle Paragraph/s: Demonstrates your skills and interest in this career field.
  • Closing Paragraph: Requests a time to meet and communicates how you can be reached. Be proactive and state when you will be in contact.
  • Don’t forget to express your appreciation for the reader’s thoughtful consideration.

Prospecting letters

Use this type when writing an unsolicited letter to an employer of interest:

  • Send to a hiring manager, using the name and title of the person.
  • Opening Paragraph: States your interest in a position coupled with your best qualification for that position, or is focused on broader occupational or career goals.
  • Middle Paragraph/s: Demonstrates what is of interest to you about the organization. Highlight your best attributes to contribute to the position or organization.
  • Closing Paragraph: Requests a time to meet and communicates how you can be reached. Be proactive and state when you will be in contact.
  • Don’t forget to express your appreciation for the reader’s thoughtful consideration.
