Cover and application letters

Use this type in response to an advertised position:

  • Introduces the resume, using vivid and pointed examples to show breadth and depth of skills.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the organization and how you fit with its mission, philosophy, and unique needs.
  • Matches your professional and personal qualifications with what the organization specifically needs for the position, is not self-centered.
  • Opening Paragraph: States the purpose of the letter and where you obtained the information, including date and publication site or who referred you. Do not state your name here. Begin to demonstrate an interest and fit with the organization and position. Why are you applying?
  • Middle Paragraph/s: Provides relevant information that generates interest in you and your skills, experience, and qualification.
  • Closing Paragraph: Requests a time to meet and communicates how you can be reached. Be proactive and state when you will contact the reader. Then do it!
  • Don’t forget to express your appreciation for the reader’s thoughtful consideration.
