Mars Space Flight FacilityMoeur Building, Room 101 Meg Hufford, Program Coordinator Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) launched in November, 1996, and began its orbit around Mars in September, 1997. While orbiting Mars, the MGS instruments will monitor and make measurements of the planet's surface and atmosphere. One of the five instruments on board is the Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES), developed by Phil Christensen and ASU's Department of Geology. TES is both an instrument and a technique and will measure the thermal infrared energy (heat) emitted from Mars. |
