ASU-Mayo Clinic Partnership

Advancing the Biosciences:
Sowing the seeds of better health

v

Dr. William James Mayo, co-founder of the Mayo Clinic, once said, "It is a great thing to make scientific discoveries of rare value, but it is even greater to be willing to share these discoveries and to encourage others in the same field of scientific research."

ASU and Mayo Clinic are working toward this vision of greatness through a partnership that pairs the university's academic expertise with the clinical community.

In February 2005, the partnership provided $200,000 in seed money to fund collaborative research on a variety of topics, including an early diagnostic test for Alzheimer's, improved treatments for Parkinson's Disease, better testing for carpal tunnel syndrome, and the links between air pollution and lung disease, among others.

The grants will allow the researchers to produce initial data that will help them win larger federal grants for continuing the projects. The seed money is just one facet of an ASU-Mayo Clinic collaborative agreement developed in 2004. The agreement also calls for the development of joint education programs, provisions for shared faculty and appointments at both institutions, and shared graduate students and involvement of Mayo Clinic faculty in ASU graduate programs.

According to Kathleen Matt, director of ASU's Office of Clinical Partnerships, these collaborations are a sign of the future of research, where interdisciplinary teams will have a distinct advantage.

"The bottom line is that if we are going to be successful in securing larger grants, such as the National Institutes of Health roadmap grants, then we need to have teams of scientists working together," she says.

The ASU-Mayo Clinic agreement was the first collaborative effort forged under the Office of Clinical Partnerships, which was created to help ASU researchers strengthen and expand connections to biomedical institutions in Arizona.
