Tips for Students

  • Go to class!
Yep, it’s that simple. Even if your class does not have strict attendance requirements, it is important to attend all of your classes to get the most from your college education. Absenteeism will dramatically hurt your grades and the amount you learn.
  • Keep your syllabus for every class handy and review it often.
The syllabus is given by an instructor at the beginning of a course. It includes instructor contact information, required readings/text books, the course objectives, assignments and deadlines, and details on how the final grade will be computed.
  • Go to class prepared.
Read the assigned materials and complete all homework. Be prepared to discuss the readings.
  • Take notes during class.
Show that you are actively listening. Participate in class discussions and ask questions. Instructors can tell who is paying attention and prepared even in large lecture classes. Get the email address or phone number of at least one other person in the class so you can compare notes or contact them if you are absent.
  • Turn in your assignments on time.
Use a planner or a PDA to keep track of assignment due dates and tests.
  • Being a student takes time.
Remember the 3-to-1 rule: you will need to spend about three hours a week for every one credit hour you are taking–15 credits equals 45 hours of study time. Being a student is a full-time job.
  • Find a good space to study—and friends to study with.
Find a nice, quiet place to study where you will be productive no matter where you are on campus. Study groups are helpful, too.
  • Review material often.
Last-minute studying is stressful and reduces your chance for good grades. Make use of time before class or waiting in line by reviewing your class notes. You should review notes every day to retain information better.
  • Ask questions if you are confused or having problems.
Visiting your professors during their office hours is an excellent way to ask questions about course assignments. Many professors believe that students do not take full advantage of office hours, so stop in and get to know them. Emailing professors with questions is a good idea if you are unable to access their office hours.
