Voices of Discovery
Students
Have you ever wanted to bring to life, or discuss in deeper detail, textbook and classroom materials focused on social groups? Would you like to experience a sustained and meaningful dialogue on differences related to identities based on race, gender, religion, and other significant dimensions? Voices of Discovery dialogue groups bring together small groups of students from diverse backgrounds to share their thoughts on life and campus experiences as they pertain to group identities.
Participants commit to 14 hours of facilitator-led dialogue over the course of seven weeks. More than just typical conversations, dialogues are:
- focused -- they explore the group's life and campus experiences in relation to a particular identity (e.g., gender) or topic (e.g., diversity through the arts).
- facilitated -- each group is led by 2 trained facilitators, who help keep the discussion flowing, relevant to the topic, and engaging for everyone.
- fair and full – each small group dialogue is equally represented by two social identities.
- free – there is no charge for this program.
- Gain insight:
- Do other students experience ASU as you do?
- Practice inquiry:
- What would you like to know from members of a group different from your own?
- Share your knowledge:
- Each individual's experiences, questions, and ideas contribute to the learning.
- Gain marketable skills,
- including interpersonal communication, sustained contact working with people who are different from you, and group-centered activity.
- Earn course credit
- for many instructors.
- Get free pizza
- at every group meeting.
Voices is undergoing a major revamping during the Spring 2007; instead, we invite you to check our calendar for other training, development and dialogue opportunities!
