Social Justice Institute

The Social Justice Institute is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate student participants to explore and engage social justice issues on a personal level. Students can take the series or individual workshops as course supplements (see instructor) or for personal and professional growth.

Participants will:

  • Build and strengthen a sense of self, and explore one’s own identity and cultural heritage
  • Explore common needs and values of all people, no matter what their skin color, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality
  • Develop a deep respect for identity differences and a capacity for celebrating and learning from, rather than merely tolerating, these differences
  • Develop an awareness of the world as one human family, with people struggling and working together, and eventually living more fully as interdependent beings
  • Become more aware of how social identity and cultural differences have been and are being unjustly handled in our society; in other words, to understand what racism, sexism, heterosexism, and nationalism are, how they work, and what can be done to interrupt social oppression
