Social Justice Campaigns
Fall Semester
Students interested in the transformation of social justice concepts and convictions into effective collective action develop leadership and advocacy skills by forming small groups. These groups identify an issue related to social justice and design a plan to actively engage the ASU community around the given concern. A trained staff member provides oversight for campaign activities and contextualizes advocacy within social, political, and historical dimensions. Additionally, students learn about and receive guidance on civic responsibilities.
Social justice campaigns can promote such goals as information gathering, education, or intervention. Examples include research that shed light on a particular injustice, the creation of materials for public education, or the coordination and design of a public forum. A minimum of 8 hours of public engagement.
Among the benefits reaped by student participants are increased knowledge around social justice issues, practice of civic engagement, development of leadership and change agent skills, and on a networking level, affiliation with local/national advocacy organizations.
Led by students enrolled in JUS 320 "Community and Social Justice", Social justice campaigns are situated in various campus locations during the fall semester.
