Other Emeritus Organizations

Emeritus organizations exist at many institutions and in countless varieties. Not all have the "college" structure that the Emeritus College at ASU enjoys, along with its physical facilities and institutional support. But a common principle is the desire of many retired faculty to maintain an association with their university.

A growing number of emeritus organizations have joined the national organization, Association of Retirement Organizations in Higher Education (AROHE). AROHE has prepared a “Start-up and Development Kit” to guide individuals who seek to set up faculty or staff retirement organizations at their host institutions.  The Kit summarizes the experiences of members of successful retiree groups and presents guidance on how to begin and maintain a retiree organization.  Included in the document are sample by-laws, strategic plans, and histories of active organizations. Individuals or organizations desiring a copy of the Start-Up and Development Kit should contact Janette Brown at jcbrown@usc.edu or write her at:  USC Emeriti Center, 3715 McClintock Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90089-0191.

At ASU, we have three retiree organizations: The Emeritus College, whose mission and goals are given elsewhere in this web site, the Arizona State University Retirees Association (ASURA), whose members come from faculty and staff and whose activities include monitoring retirement benefits and participating in the political process as it relates to the University and to retirement policies. ASURA also provides much that enhances the whole life of its members. The ASU Faculty Emeriti Association provides social opportunities for emeriti and emeritae and has some service activities, primarily a graduate student fellowship fund. Officers and members of these three sister organizations mix and overlap to a great extent.

Retirement organizations whose web site links are listed on this page generally share a primary interest in the continued intellectual and creative lives of its members. The number of retirees associations whose mission and scope is similar to that of ASURA, for example, far exceeds what is listed here.
