Welcome to the Emeritus College at Arizona State University.

As the second dean of the ASU Emeritus College, I draw upon our Founding Dean Dick Jacob's prior statement to all on the establishment of the College in 2005.   President Michael Crow responded to Dick and other founding ASU emeriti with the challenge "to build a college that would distinguish ASU among the nation's universities."   As the information on our Emeritus College web site indicates, we have been active in pursuing that charge.

Our college programming ranges from continuing engagement of many of our emeriti faculty in ongoing instruction and research to innovative programs like the emeritus art exhibit at our Downtown campus to display the great artistic talents of many of our members, dance and musical performances, informal luncheon colloquia on topics of emeriti expertise, regular colloquia for the university and general communities, outreach to our K-12 and community college systems, offering 5-week courses in Tempe on a wide array of topics in our EC Academy for Continued Learning, and other academic activities including research proposals and grants in a continuation of what we have been doing all our academic lives.

These and many other Emeritus College Activities have provided venues for extensive or limited participation by our emeriti membership.   This has and continues to enrich our university community and is a joy to many members and others who are welcome to our programs.

We invite all ASU retired faculty who have emeritus status to affiliate with the College.   We also provide membership opportunities to other recognized college and university emeriti faculty who reside in the metropolitan Phoenix area and to ASU Lecturers and Instructors who have retired.   Our founding membership has been growing and currently stands at more than 350.   If you are not yet a member of the Emeritus College but would like to be one, just send an e-mail message to me at len.gordon@asu.edu or to our able College Administrative Assistant Maureen Graff at   Maureen.Graff@asu.edu.    You may also download a membership application from this web site.

Throughout the academic year information will be available from the Emeritus College on how our college programming is extending the activities of our established centers, series of academic colloquia and symposia, artistic and performance programming, and innovations which have been occurring since our inception.   As with each of our members, I am very pleased to participate in the ASU Emeritus College.   We have been and continue to be a viable part of our university's great mission to advance knowledge in the academy within a framework of liberty, tolerance, and mutual respect.   And as part of that, we have coffee and tea and an inviting setting for you to stop in anytime to our College offices in Wilson 101 on our Tempe Campus to relax and say hello.
