Baccalaureate Degree Requirements

A minimum of 120 semester hours and 45 upper-division semester hours (300 and 400 level courses) are required for a bachelor’s degree.

First Year Composition Requirement

Students must demonstrate reasonable proficiency in written English by achieving a grade of “C” or better in both ENG 101 and 102 or in ENG 105 or their equivalents. Should a student receive a grade lower than “C” in any of the courses, it must be repeated until the specified proficiency is demonstrated.

General Studies Requirements

All undergraduate students are required to complete the university General Studies requirements in order to be eligible for graduation. Many general studies requirements may simultaneously fulfill university and major requirements (see shaded regions).

Computer Science Requirement

Any CS course from the university General Studies list that involves the use of computer application skills is acceptable. It may be included within the Mathematical Studies requirement where appropriate. Please see your academic advisor for a complete list of acceptable courses. Below is a list of commonly taken courses:

Writing Competency Requirement
In addition to ENG 101 and 102 First-Year Composition or their equivalents, one of the following courses in advanced written expository composition is required of all undergraduate majors:

ENG 216 Persuasive Writing
ENG 217 Writing Reflective Essays
ENG 218 Writing about Literature
ENG 301 Writing for the Professions
JMC 201 Journalism Newswriting
JMC 202 Radio-TV Writing

This course will be counted as fulfilling the university General Studies literacy and critical inquiry (L) requirement.

Pass/Fail Option

Courses completed for pass/fail credit may count only as elective credit in meeting degree requirements.

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Communication

It is mandatory during the Freshman year that students enroll in courses that will remove any competency deficiencies incurred at the time of admittance to Arizona State University, as well as complete the First Year Composition requirement.

All students enter The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication as preprofessional and are expected to achieve professional status after completing 56 hours.

Communication students achieve professional status upon :

  • the completion of at least 56 semester hours;
  • the completion of the university First-Year Composition Requirement;
  • the completion of the university mathematics requirement (MA) with a grade of “C” or better;
  • the completion of the computer science requirement;
  • the completion of the writing competence requirement;
  • the completion of the communication requirement; and
  • the completion of 12 semester hours of Communication core course requirements (COM 100, 207, 225, 308) with a grade of “C” or better in each. COM 308 must be taken at ASU Main campus.

Minimum 2.5 ASU GPA is required for professional status.

Other courses required in the major for graduation purposes include 6 COM courses (18 hours) where introductory courses are paired with advanced courses and include an additional 5 courses (15 hours) of Communication electives. Additional coursework for the B.A. and B.S. are described in the ASU General Catalog.

G.P.A. Requirements

  • A cumulative ASU grade point average of 2.25 is required for entry into COM 110, 241, 250, and 263.
  • A cumulative ASU grade point average of 2.50 is required for entry into COM 207 and all upper division COM courses (COM 300–400 level courses).
  • Students must attain a grade of “C” or better in all COM major requirement courses.

The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication moved administrative homes from the College of Public Programs to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences effective July 1, 2004. Students pursuing a degree in Communication according to a catalog year prior to 2005–2006 will complete the degree requirements respective to their appropriate catalog.
