The Indigenous Early Intervention Alliance (IEIA) and the Office of American Indian Projects (OAIP)

The Indigenous Early Intervention Alliance (IEIA) and the Office of American Indian Projects (OAIP) is pleased to give an update on our toy drive and scholarships for tribal children.  Last year we collected 1,100 total toys specifically targeted toward Indigenous children and their families.  Our goal this year was to have 2,200 by December 2009.   We currently have 2,263 items (toys, clothing, shoes, etc.).   The toy drive, coordinated by Dr. Michael Niles (ASU/OAIP/IEIA) and Dr. Lisa Byers (OU/IEIA) is the largest targeted toy drive in the nation for Indigenous children.

This makes ASU and OU national leaders in gifting to Indigenous children.  Please stop by my office to see what 2,200 toys look like.  We will continue collect toys through December 2009.

As most are aware, the IEIA and OAIP gives away 7-8 scholarships (personal $$) to Indigenous college students.  We have received 118 applications from around the world (New Zealand to Peru to Alaska and everywhere in between).

2009 MishkoswIn Scholarship

2009 Esbesendowen Scholarship

2009 Keepers Scholarship

2009 John Sky Scholarship

Thanks again and please donate a toy if you can during this difficult economic time.  Best wishes.

Native American Summer Institute

June 9-12, 2009

The Native American Summer Institute at ASU was established to increase the enrollment and graduation rates of Native American students by introducing them to campus services and programs. NASI provides Native American students with an intense four-day residential orientation that includes:

Culturally specific workshops and presentations
One-on-one meetings with academic advisors, faculty, and staff
Class registration and advisement
Leadership development and academic and social integration and involvement
NASI is the only orientation at ASU specifically designed for Native American students. For the past 12 years, we have successfully served over 700 students through leadership training in social, cultural, and academic activities. NASI has proven to be effective in increasing student participation in Native American programs, clubs, and organizations, which are vital in student retention.

Passport to ASU is the signature event of Fall Welcome Week and an ASU tradition that is embraced by our students. Last year, more than 5,000 students and family members participated. This year will be BIGGER and BETTER than ever! As we begin planning for Passport 2009 we recognize in order to make this event a success we will need YOUR help! Passport is a fun evening for students, families and staff working the event. It’s also a time for administrators and staff to come together to interact with students and give them encouragement as they begin the academic year.

If you are interested in volunteering, please go to the following link http://www.vpsa.asu.edu/studentaffairs/transitions/swt/signature_event.asp by June 30th.

The First Peoples Fund
Native American Artists
Professional Development Workshops

The Tucson Pima Arts Council is pleased to announce a unique offering for Native American Artists residing in Arizona. The First Peoples Fund - which supports the advancement of American Indian arts through grants, fellowships and professional development - will be hosted by TPAC in offering an arts marketing and professional development curriculum, specifically designed with Native artists in mind. The First Peoples Fund Native American Artists Professional Development Workshops offer comprehensive, hands-on training experience that will enhance the artists’ business skill sets and prepare them for their journey toward becoming successful artist entrepreneurs.

The First Peoples Fund Native American Artists Professional Development Workshops are geared to give Native artists the tools and the support they need to manage small entrepreneurial businesses to achieve economic success. The goal is to enable Native artists to make a living from their art through sales, allowing them to sustain themselves, their families and their communities.

This resource takes Native artists on a journey that begins by helping artists express their values and vision that will ultimately become the principle foundation of their business. A series of self-assessment tools helps the artist determine where they are in terms of their art marketing, business and financial management skills, while planning and budgeting tools help develop and enhance their skills set. Intensive pricing and marketing sessions are included along with a sample business plan and a breadth of resources.

The workshops can accommodate up to 24 artists. To be accepted into the workshops, artists must apply. Applications will be reviewed by a selection panel and the most qualified applicants will be selected. *ONLY artists residing in Arizona may apply. Preference will be given to Pima County and southern Arizona residents.

Summer Food Sites for Children 2009

(Maricopa County)

For summer feeding, children do not have to individually qualify. We qualify feeding sites based on school free/reduced lunch data, census data, etc. Once a site has been approved, any child ages 18 and under can come to meal service and receive a free meal. Here is the link to find the approved feeding sites: http://www.ade.az.gov/health-safety/cnp/sfp/. The top middle box states “Summer Food  Sites in Arizona.” If you click on it, it brings up a database, you can search by city. This database tells where the feeding site is, what meals they are serving and at what times. We update this database every week during the summer as new sites are added and some sites close. Please check it frequently to make sure you are using the most current database.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

Black Mesa Water Coalition is announcing our very 1st Leadership Institute. The Leadership Institute is designed to assist emerging youth & community leaders in developing & refining their leadership skills.  We are only able to accept 20 Southwest Indigenous/Native young people, between the ages of 18 - 29 years old, to participate in this year's Institute.  Those selected will be able to participate in two weeks of focused trainings, sharing, and reflection to build upon their organizing and leadership skills.  In addition, the Leadership Institute aims to build a network of emerging and established inter-generational leaders supporting one another as we work together in building a better world.

EARTHSCOPE - MARGINS Program
Full Proposal Deadline Date: July 1, 2009

Reminder:  The deadline for submitting proposals to the MARGINS solicitation, including post-doctoral fellowship proposals, is July 1, 2009.  The guidelines follow the MARGINS Solicitation 07-546 (see link above); however, the July 1 2009 deadline will have somewhat different emphasis than in the past.  This difference is important, emphasizing integration and synthesis activities, and will likely affect funding priorities.

The Preface from NSF's MARGINS web site (above) explains the new emphasis:  "July 1, 2009 is a deadline for submittal of MARGINS proposals for FY 2010 (which starts in October 2009). FY2010 is a period of transition for the MARGINS Program, while decision is being made for the continuation of a successor program. During this transition, for the next proposal submittal deadline (July 1, 2009) MARGINS program at NSF encourages the community to submit proposals for integrative/synthesis activities under the current MARGINS Program. Proposals for new data collection efforts should be limited to short-duration efforts for filling important gaps critical to the completion of such integration and synthesis goals."

Several useful documents provide more details, both on the FY2010 proposal round and on the MARGINS Review context.  They may be helpful in preparing proposals, and include:

A Feb. 2009 Letter from Program Manager Bilal Haq, addressing the FY2010 proposals: http://www.nsf-margins.org/index_News%20from%20NSF2009.pdf

The documentation prepared for the Decadal Review, the Review Committee Report, and responses by the MARGINS Steering Committee and by NSF Program Managers:  http://www.nsf-margins.org/Review2009

And, as always, a variety of other material on the MARGINS web page  http://www.nsf-margins.org

NSF Program Managers for MARGINS come from Ocean Sciences/MGG, Earth Sciences, and Ocean Sciences/ODP:

Bilal U. Haq   bhaq@nsf.gov   (703) 292-8581
William Leeman  wleeman@nsf.gov  (703) 292-7411
