Arizona Innovators looking to increase their successes in obtaining federal funding through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs should participate in the upcoming events being hosted by ASU Technopolis.

 

  • SBIR/STTR Phase I Writing Proposal Workshop will be held Thursday, August 27, 2009, at ASU SkySong in Scottsdale. The Writing Proposal Workshop is an exclusive eight-hour session targeting early-stage, first-time or unsuccessful writers of SBIR/STTR Phase I proposals. It offers participants a structured SBIR/STTR grant-writing methodology demonstrated to be highly successful.

 

  • Technology/Product Roadmap Planning program will be held Friday, August 28, 2009, at ASU SkySong in Scottsdale. The 8-hour workshop is designed to help early stage ventures improve the planning of their products or technologies and to communicate to key stakeholders its technology innovations and commercialization position. Participants will be shown how to apply Technology/Product Roadmap Planning to increase their grant success.

Science Foundation Arizona (SFAz)

·         SFAz Graduate Research Fellowship Program offered to attract and support the very best graduate students to qualifying research performing institutions in order to advance the competitive research capacity in science, engineering and biomedical research in Arizona.

·         Small Business Catalytics offers funding in two categories: Seed Funding that SFAz provides to Arizona’s researchers is intended to act as a catalyst for technology development and company formation.  Product Accelerator funding is intended for funding of an R&D partnership between a principal investigator (PI) at one of Arizona’s RPIs and an Arizona company (including RPI spin-outs) at a critical phase in the product development cycle that requires a joint research effort between the PI and company to ensure a products success and accelerate its time to market.

As part of a Technology Incubation and Maturation Program for the Maritime Laser Demonstrator (MLD), the Office of Naval Research invites white paper proposals from academia and industry sources capable of providing to the Navy innovative High Energy Laser system technology (hardware and software), tools, concept designs, engineering and technical studies with the potential for involvement in the demonstrations and testing of a prototype MLD for use as counter-material/lethal effects against small boat threats. DARPA is soliciting interested participants to join in the Computer Science Study Group to help identify ideas in the field of computer science that will provide revolutionary advances to the Department of Defense. This opportunity is for selection to participate in Phase I of the program, which consists of both a series of briefings and visits, administered by the Institute for Defense Analyses to a variety of military sites and facilities over the course of a 12-month period, as well as individual research programs. A participant must be eligible to receive a U.S. SECRET security clearance and be a junior faculty member at a U.S. institution of higher learning, and should be no more than 7 years beyond receiving a doctoral degree, pre-tenure junior faculty, with demonstrated exceptional potential for world-class contributions to the field of computer science. ·         New Investigator Award (W81XWH-09-PRCRP-NIA) - approximately 5 awards of up to $275,000 to support the career transition and/or continued development of promising investigators who have innovative, high-impact ideas or new technologies applicable to genetic cancer research. Eligibility is restricted to investigators at or below the level of assistant professor who are within three years of have received their first independent faculty position. ·         Synergistic Idea Award (W81XWH-09-PRCRP-SIA) - One award of up to $1.75 million for a collaborative partnership to support innovative approaches to pediatric brain tumor research involving a cross-disciplinary team of faculty investigators. Eligibility is restricted to teams of at least 2, and up to 4, investigators at or above the level of assistance professor. Pre-applications are due Aug 5; full applications are due Dec 9.

·         Collaborative Transitional Science Award(W81XWH-09-PRCRP-CTSA) - approximately 3 awards of up to $1.125 million to support collaborative partnerships to accelerate the development of promising ideas in melanoma and other skin cancer research. The Air Force Research Laboratory invites white papers for research, design, development, test, evaluation and experimentation of technologies/techniques for command, control, communications, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems. Focus areas include ultra-wide bandwidth, multi-channeled air and space-based communications networks on and between platforms, surveillance, data links and airborne networking and network modeling and simulation. DOE anticipates $25-75 million available under this FOA. Responses are due Aug 18.

·         Recovery Act: Solid-State Lighting Product Development - Round VI (DE-FOA-0000055) invites proposals for product development of general illumination Solid-State Lighting sources, luminaires, and enabling products. Achieving this goal through the systematic use of knowledge gained from basic and applied research to develop or improve commercially viable materials, devices, or systems. Responses are due Aug 17.

·         Recovery Act: Building America Energy Efficient Housing Partnerships (DE-FOA-0000099) is seeking applications for industry teams to implement the Building America Program's research program for new and existing homes. The announcement also offers a limited opportunity for industry teams to focus on stimulating the existing home retrofit market. DOE anticipates making 2-4 awards for each interest area with $10 million for the first area for up to 5 years and $15 million for the retrofit area for 2 years. Letters of intent are due Aug 24.

·         Recovery Act: Geologic Sequestration Training and Research (DE-FOA-0000032) invites proposals to provide training opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students that will provide the human capital and skills required for implementing and deploying Carbon Capture & Sequestration (CCS) technologies. Fundamental research is needed to advance science in: simulation and risk assessment; monitoring, verification, and accounting; geological related analytical tools; methods to interpret geophysical models; well completion and integrity for long-term CO2 storage; and CO2 capture. Eligibility is restricted to universities, colleges, and college-affiliated research institutions as well as Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Other Minority Institutions. DOE anticipates making 42 awards from a total funding of $12.93 million with a maximum award of $300,000. Responses are due Aug 11.

·         Recovery Act: Solid State Lighting U.S. Manufacturing-Round I (DE-FOA-0000057) is announcing funding to achieve cost reduction of solid-state lighting for general illumination through improvements in manufacturing equipment, processes, or techniques. A secondary objective is to maintain, in the case of light emitting diodes, or establish, in the case of organic light emitting diodes, the manufacturing and technology base within the US. Proposals are due Aug 24.

·         Recovery Act: Solid-State Lighting Core-Round VI (DE-FOA-0000082) is the sixth in a series of announcements projected to span the next decade. As the relevant Solid-State Lighting technology base matures, it is anticipated that the present level, applied research, will advance to market conditioning once the targets for efficiency, cost, longevity, stability, and control are demonstrated in a product environment. Proposals are due Aug 10.

·         Recovery Act: Hydroelectric Facility Modernization (DE-FOA-0000120) is announcing a grant to develop, deploy, and test hydropower projects that would modernize the existing hydropower infrastructure in the U.S. and increase both the quantity and value of hydropower generation, including environmental performance. Up to 10 awards are expected to be made. Proposals are due Aug 20.

·         Recovery Act: Training Program Development for Commercial Building Equipment Technicians, Building Operators, and Energy Commissioning Agents/Auditors (DE-FOA-0000118) is seeking applications for projects that focus on developing training programs for various building specialists. The objective is to enable the development of a workforce that can bring existing commercial buildings up to their energy performance potential and to help ensure that new commercial buildings do not fall below their expected optimal level of performance. Applications are due is Sep 1. Estimated total program funding is $7.5 million. 

 

The Department of Energy invites grant applications under the Solar America Cities program to accelerate solar energy deployment. The selected recipients will proactively address the solar-related information needs of significant local markets, as well as provide a mechanism by which individual local governments can receive and share timely information on solar energy. Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation

Department of Commerce
As part of its plan to distribute Recovery Act funding the National Telecommunications and Information Administration within the Department of Commerce has released two solicitations relating to broadband deployment across the country. ·         The Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) will award $4.0 billion in grants for deploying broadband infrastructure in unserved and underserved areas in the United States, enhancing broadband capacity at public computer centers, and promoting sustainable broadband adoption projects. One of the objectives of the program is to support projects that "provide broadband access, education, awareness, training, equipment, and support to community anchor institutions. or job-creating strategic facilities located in state- or federally-designated economic development areas." Applications to fund broadband infrastructure projects in areas which are at least 75% rural are required to be submitted to USDA Rural Utilities Service for consideration under the Broadband Initiatives Program. Applications will be accepted until Aug 14.

·         The State Broadband Data Program is a competitive, merit-based matching grant program that will fund projects that collect comprehensive and accurate state-level broadband mapping data, develop state-level broadband maps, aid in the development and maintenance of a national broadband map, and fund statewide initiatives directed at broadband planning. A 20% nonfederal match is required. Each state may have only a single eligible entity. Applications will be accepted until Aug 14.

 

Department of Labor
As part of the distribution plan for Recovery Act funding, the Department of Labor invites grant proposals for the State Energy Sector Partnership and Training Grants. The grants are targeted for State Workforce Investment Boards of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories to workforce sector strategies that target energy efficiency and renewable energy industries. DOL encourages a strategic planning process that aligns the Governor's overall workforce vision, state energy policies, and local and regional training activities that lead to employment in targeted industry sectors. A portion of the funds under this solicitation will be reserved for communities or regions undergoing auto industry related restructurings. Total funding available is $190 million.
