January 2003This briefing packet provides some background for Arizona State University’s plans to enhance our research capacity. Research capacity has been pinpointed as the single most critical factor in shaping regional economic success and, as United States Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has argued, investment in university research structure is a key to building economic resiliency. Arizona has fought throughout its history to build economic prosperity, and we cannot stop now. We have secured the physical infrastructure that makes our life in the desert possible, managing our water and building the roads for our cities, towns and farms. Today, the fight is for knowledge infrastructure, in this case, research infrastructure. Without research infrastructure in our metropolitan universities we cannot compete for the industries, companies and jobs Arizona needs to prosper. We are glad to be working together with the business community to build the infrastructure for Arizona’s future economic success.
