HFR's 50th Issue: Send Us Your Artifact SubmissionsTo celebrate Hayden's Ferry Review's 25th anniversary, we've got a special theme in the works. We'd like to receive work—fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, translations, art, mixed-media—that addresses the theme of "artifacts," as described (somewhat vaguely, on purpose!) here. Art is, by its nature, a record. Literature, photographs, paintings, music: all these seek to catalogue the world just as they seek to elevate and transform it. A piece of art is also then, by its nature, an artifact: an object with unique meaning both within its context and apart from it. For HFR's 50th issue, we're interested in investigating how fragments and relics from our history help to shape our current state of being. What happens when you wrest an object from its homeland (in time, place, state of mind)? Why do we trust remnants of the past as distinctively truthful, and how do we inevitably misunderstand them? Send us writing and art that engages with the theme of "artifact" in whatever way you see fit. Consider the fact that writing itself—the writing, for instance, in HFR's 49 past issues—becomes a slightly different object upon publication and perusal. Consider that work banned in one country develops a new set of meaning in other places. Consider how artifacts shape the identities of people, nations, cultures. Consider the lives of fraudulent artifacts, objects that create invented histories and narratives. And hey, consider something that we haven't. Tell us all about ourselves: we trust you. To submit, go to our submission manager. Choose the genre you're submitting under, and mention that you're submitting in response to our "artifact" call in the comments section. The deadline for this call is January 1, 2012. We look forward to reading your work!
About Our Editorial ProcessPLEASE NOTE: We will no longer be accepting submissions by mail after May 31, 2010. HFR editors read year-round—response time is 12-16 weeks. Contributors receive two copies of the magazine, and a one-year gift subscription to HFR. Simultaneous submissions are welcome. If your work is accepted elsewhere, please notify the editors immediately. We do not accept previously published material.

InternationalHayden’s Ferry Review is looking for translations that pay close attention to cultural bodies, the way they identify themselves, interact, and maintain their distinctions. HFR’s international section wishes to explore these living arrangements as perceived by the inhabitant writer. Our intention is publish work not hitherto available to an English speaking or reading audience. Poetry is published on facing pages with the original language; the original prose texts are published on our website. Work accepted for publication will be accompanied by a translator's note, 250-500 words, providing relevant information about the translated work—the author, cultural context, or the process of translation itself. Please include your entire submission in one file, and be sure your name and contact information are included on the first page of the file. Include both the author and translator’s names, and the original language the work was written/published in. All work should be uploaded through our submissions manager. Acceptable file formats include .doc, .rtf and .pdf. Please send one submission at a time, and wait for a response before you submit additional work. We do not consider book-length works. Submitters are strongly encouraged to read the journal before submitting. Sample work from current and past issues is available on our website.
