Writers Conference

Small Group Instruction will meet Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 12 pm – 2 pm. Because Small Group Instruction takes place over the scheduled conference lunch break, lunches will be provided to Small Group Instruction participants only. Those who register for Small Group Instruction will be contacted after registration with menu options.

Courses are limited to five to eight students per teacher. Students may register for ONE COURSE ONLY.

You will be required to submit a manuscript to the Piper Center by January 10, 2007. Please click here for information regarding manuscript submission.

You will be required to download and print your workshop members' manuscripts from the Piper Center website after January 15, 2007.  Please make notes and suggestions on these copies and bring them with you to the conference.

All students will read their workshop peers' work prior to the conference.

Please indicate your top three choices of instructor on your registration form. Classes may be created or closed based on demand. If your class choices have been cancelled or are full at the time of your registration, we will notify you immediately and return your Small Group Instruction registration fees. We do not provide refunds of Small Group Instruction under any other conditions.  

Level 1 is appropriate for students with little or no writing workshop experience, or writers who are new to their genre.

Level 2 is appropriate for experienced writers or writers who have participated in four or more writing workshops.

Manuscript Guidelines

Manuscripts for Small Group Instruction should be formatted as follows:

1. All manuscripts should be typed in Times New Roman 11 pt.

2. All manuscripts must include page numbers on each page.

3. All manuscripts should include a header with the author's name, address, phone, and e-mail at the top of the page.

4. Manuscripts of fiction, genre fiction, and nonfiction should be double spaced. Poetry may be single-spaced. Playwriting should follow conventional script guidelines at the author's discretion.

Poetry: 8 pages
Genre Fiction: 20 pages
Fiction: 20 pages
Nonfiction: 20 pages
Playwriting: 30 pages

Manuscript Submission

Participants should submit their manuscripts to crj@asu.edu and ONLY in
Microsoft Word format.

Once a manuscript is submitted, it may not be changed, altered, or replaced by the author with revised versions.

Manuscripts will be uploaded to the Desert Nights, Rising Stars website. Each workshop will have its own download page where students may download individual participants' works at their convenience.

Students will need to print out all student works from their workshops. Prior to the conference, students should read all other students' work to make notes and suggestions. Students should bring their annotated copies to the Desert Nights, Rising Stars conference.

Manuscripts must be received by January 10, 2007. If participants are more than three days late submitting their manuscript, they will be dropped from their workshop with no refund given.
