In the fall of 2009 we unveiled an Online Book Club that responds to some of the shared concerns of the group about email-traffic and meaningful, moderated, lively discussions. The listserv has served the book club well over the last four years but, to respond to the changing needs of the group and to utilize new opportunities, the center shifted to an internet-accessible club via the Blogger platform. For those familiar with the blog format, [a contraction of the term web log], we intend a discussion forum with ongoing commentary and archives.
You can drop in on the blog whenever it is convenient for you, and for those who enjoy the email reminders, there will be an RSS feed option: you can receive an e-alert when new material has been posted to the blog.
The club will continue to read works of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. Authors whose work is selected usually visit the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing at Arizona State University during the semester in which the book is read. This allows club members the opportunity to hear authors read from their work. The new platform will allow us to also include author-exclusive bonuses for those who are out of the Tempe area (podcasts, video, etc.).
As always, we also encourage member suggestions. Please email the center directly at firstname.lastname@example.org with your suggestions in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.
We're very excited about this new phase for the Online Book Club and look forward to continuing the great discussions on important books.
