Named for the Mont-Royal tripartite hill in the center of the city and the island on which it is built, Montreal was originally called the City of Mary. Montreal is the second largest city in Canada, located in southern Quebec where the Ottawa and Saint Lawrence Rivers merge, at the western end of the Saint Lawrence Seaway. Formerly the center of Canada’s industry and finance, today Montreal is known as the cultural capital of Canada, and is famous for its churches and belltowers. Piper Global sponsors two students to participate in the Summer Literary Seminar, held for the first time in Montreal in 2010.
