University Office of Evaluation and Educational Effectiveness

Surveys

The UOEEE research and evaluation team designs and conducts original survey research projects for administrative planning, decision making, policy development, accreditation, and official reporting. Listed below are descriptions of the annual survey research projects we conduct as well a sample of ad hoc projects we have led to investigate pressing university issues.

The research and evaluation team also provides survey consultation to academic and administrative units. UOEEE also accepts requests for customized analyses of our survey data or ad hoc projects to meet college and departmental needs. If you have such a request please contact Dr. Lenay Dunn at 480-965-9291 or lenay.dunn@asu.edu or Dr. Gerald Blankson at 480-965-9291 or gerald.blankson@asu.edu .

Survey results are used for official reporting to the Arizona Board of Regents, Arizona State Legislature, the Higher Learning Commission, and other organizations. In addition, results are used internally to improve ASU programs, processes and policies.

Annual Surveys

Recent Graduate Survey
Recent graduates are surveyed approximately 3-6 months after graduation from ASU. Questions focus on post-graduation employment and education pursuits. Graduates who earned certificates or minors are asked additional questions about their academic experiences. These data are used in academic program assessment, planning, and official reporting.
First Year Student Survey
All first-year, first-time ASU students at all campuses receive a survey with items focusing on reasons for attending ASU, early experiences, expectations, and background demographics. Students receive the survey in the latter part of the fall semester. It is administered in first-year writing courses with the invaluable assistance of The Writing Programs and course instructors. Students receive the online version of the survey if they are not enrolled in a first-year writing course or do not complete the paper version.
Persistence Survey
In the fall, we attempt to contact first-year students from the previous fall who did not return to ASU. The feedback provided by former students, parents, and family members provides the university with valuable information about why students did not return to ASU, feedback about current pathways being explored, and whether they plan to return to ASU. The University Office of Institutional Analysis reports official enrollment and retention information for the University.
Graduating Senior Report Card
Over 7,000 graduating seniors complete this exit survey each year when they apply for graduation. Questions focus on overall experiences at ASU, experiences in their academic major and general education courses, university services, and post-graduation employment and education plans. Department key item results are posted on the Academic Program Profile (APP).
Graduate & Law Student Report Card
Approximately 2,000 graduating graduate and law students complete this exit survey each year when they apply for graduation. Questions focus on overall experiences at ASU, experiences in their academic major, and post-graduation plans. Department key item results are posted on the Academic Program Profile (APP).
Undergraduate Alumni Survey
Undergraduate alumni are sent a survey approximately 3 years after graduation from ASU. They are asked about their perceptions of ASU, how well ASU prepared them for subsequent employment and education, as well as employment and post-education activities.
Graduate Alumni Survey
Graduate alumni receive a survey approximately 3 years after graduation from ASU. They are asked about their perceptions of ASU, how well ASU prepared them for subsequent employment and education, and their employment.
Advising Survey
In late fall a randomly selected group of sophomores and juniors are surveyed on their experiences with academic advising through via email and phone. The results of this survey are used for official university reporting and to provide the university with valuable information about student satisfaction with advising.

Selected Ad Hoc/Topical Surveys

Office of General Counsel Survey (2009)

UOEEE worked with OGC to develop and administer a client satisfaction survey to guide the department’s planning activities.

Family Services Survey (2009)

The ASU Office of Off-Campus & Commuter Student Services (OCCSS) provides family services for students such as child care subsidies and referrals. UOEEE randomly sampled 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students and implemented online and phone surveys to assess the need for family services on the Tempe campus via an online and phone survey.

ABOR Course Materials Costs Survey (2007)

The Arizona Board of Regents was exploring factors linked to increases in textbook and course materials expenses experienced by Arizona students.  UOEEE surveyed instructional faculty and academic chairs at ASU, NAU, and U of A and requested feedback on the costs of printed course materials.  Topics included:  ordering new textbooks/course materials; ordering timelines; new editions of previously used materials; bundled materials; course packets, and late order.

+/- Grading Survey (2006-2007)

UOEEE conducted a survey to gauge faculty and student feedback about, perceptions of, and recommendations on the current and future use of the +/- grading system at ASU.

Enrollment Options Survey (2006)

UOEEE conducted a pilot survey of students in select majors (e.g., business and psychology) regarding future enrollment plans if enrollment in their major was to be limited at Tempe campus but offered at other ASU campuses.

ASU Opinion Survey (1997-2001)

Arizona Senator, John Huppenthal, initiated this monthly opinion survey. UOEEE surveyed a random sample of ASU faculty, staff, students, and Phoenix metropolitan area community members.  This brief survey measured the degree to which respondents were satisfied with services provided by the university.

Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) (1995)

Under the auspices of ABOR, the University Office of Evaluation and Educational Effectiveness, in conjunction with the University of Arizona and Northern State University, conducted a state-wide survey of students who exited the universities during the 1995-96 academic year.  The survey was in response to concerns raised by the Arizona Auditor General regarding the number of well-qualified students leaving the state’s three institutions prior to graduation.  Phone surveys were conducted with a sample of approximately 3,000 students who had left either ASU, UofA, or NAU.
