How do get a SUN CARD (the ASU ID)?
The SUN CARD is the permanent ASU photo identification card. This ID may be used to obtain university parking decals, bookstore discounts, library privileges, events tickets and access to certain buildings on campus. SUN CARDs can be obtained by going to the SUN CARD office with a photo ID.

ASU Tempe Campus: SUN CARDS can be obtained in the northeast corner of the first floor in Memorial Union Building . Call 1- (480) 965-2273 with SUN CARD questions. SUN CARD Office Hours are Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm . During peak times additional hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays to 6:00 pm .

ASU West Campus: SUN CARDS can be obtained at the Admissions and Records in the University Center Building, UCB 120, during regular office hours.

ASU at the Polytechnic Campus: SUN CARDS can be obtained at the OASIS Center in the Academic Center Building, Garden Level, during regular office hours. (Go to top)
How can I open an ASU email account?
With the admission letter, you will receive an ASURITE user ID, an activation code and instructions to go to http://www.asu.edu/asurite in order to activate your account. This site will allow new students to activate their ASURITE user ID from an off-campus computer and create his or her own password.

After asking you to review our policies and security information, the system will verify your identity by requesting your date of birth. You will then be required to select your password/passphrase. (Go to top)
What is ASURITE?
ASURITE is an acronym for “Arizona State University’s Rational Information Technology Environment.” ASURITE is a centralized, server-based computer architecture that allows for the storage and retrieval of user information in providing services to the ASU community such as electronic mail, web access, AFS storage space, etc. Each faculty member, staff member and student is assigned an ASURITE ID and may choose a password. You will use your ASURITE user ID and password to login to myASU. If you are unsure about what your ASURITE user ID and/or password are, you should visit the Computer Accounts Office or call 1- (480) 965-1211. (Go to top)
How can I log on my personal computer to work on ASU network?

Do I need a U.S. Social Security card?
F-1 and J-1 students can obtain a Social Security number and report it to the ASU Registrar’s office. To apply for a Social Security number, contact the International Student Office. Note: The Social Security number issued to international students is not a work permit and cannot be used for the purpose of establishing eligibility to work in the U.S. (Go to top)
Can I get an Arizona driver's license?
To find out if you are eligible for an Arizona driver's license, please contact the Arizona Department of Transportation at 1- (602) 255-0072 and check the documentation and tests required. (Go to top)
How do I provide proof of current measles vaccination?
ASU requires proof of two (2) Measles (Rubeola)/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) immunizations or a lab test that shows immunity to Measles (Rubeola) on record at Student Health. Proof of current measles vaccination is required before registration for classes will be permitted.
  • At least one of the shots must have been given after 1979.
  • The immunization requirement is waived if you were born before January 1, 1957.
  • The MMR immunization is available at Student Health for $36.00, plus a $10.00 visit fee if you are not a student.

How do I register for my classes?
Class registration can be done online via ASU Interactive, via Sundial (ASU's touch-tone telephone at 1- (480) 350-1500) or in person at the Registrar's office.

International students must register for at least 9 credit hours (or 6 credit hours in case of RA/TA) to be considered full time student. (Go to top)
How do I pay my tuition?
CONACYT students do not need to pay tuition or hold classes with financial aid. They are automatically enrolled after registering for classes. How do I get a meal plan?
There are meal plan options available through Campus Dining at ASU. Depending on your lifestyle, meal plans can be very convenient. Meal plans may be purchased at the Campus Dining office in the Memorial Union. They may be used at the dining facilities located in Manzanita, Palo Verde Main, Sahuaro and the Memorial Union.

II - On campus

How can I find my way on campus?
Maps, building codes and directions are available online. There are also map and directory panels spread throughout the campuses. Two of the most popular places, the Memorial Union and the ASU Bookstore are located on Orange Street in the center of the main campus. (Go to top)

III - Moving/Utilities

What are my housing options?
Students have three housing options: on-campus, off-campus or homestays (with a host family). Students interested in living in the campus dorms should contact ASU Residential Life and apply for on-campus housing after being admitted to ASU. Space is limited and is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Students interested in living off-campus can find more information on how to look for a place at: http://phoenix.craigslist.org/apa/ or http://asasu.net/usg/services/off-campus-housing.php. For those who wish to live with a host family, OvECs Ltd. is a company that provides student placement services with registered families. (Go to top)
How can I find an apartment?
It is relatively easy to find apartments and roommates around campus. A good source of information on how to start looking for it is the Undergraduate Student Government Services website. The State Press, ASU's independent newspaper, also has a classified ads section. There are also free apartment guides available in grocery stores or other online services, such as www.rent.com. Please feel free to contact any of the current ASU-CONACYT students for advice. (Go to top)
What do I need to sign an apartment lease?
The requirements vary according to the landlord or apartment complex. Some complexes may request a Social Security number to check credit history. Since most international students have not established a credit history, there might be a need to pay a security deposit on top of other applicable charges. (Go to top)
How do I set up utilities? What do I need?
Depending on the leasing agreement, students living off-campus may need to set up utilities (water, power, gas, phone, internet, etc.) in case they are not included in monthly rent. The most common providers for the Tempe area are SRP for electricity, the City of Tempe for water and sewage, Southwest Gas Corporation for gas, Qwest for land phone and internet, and Cox Communications for cable TV and cable internet. To set up these services, students will need to contact these companies' customer service departments and have necessary documents ready, such as a Social Security card. Students without Social Security cards may be required to pay a one time deposit on top of the first month bill. (Go to top)

IV - Bank account

Where can I open a new bank account?
There is no specific banking institution affiliated with ASU. Students can select from institutions such as Arizona State Savings and Credit Union, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Bank One (JPMorgan Chase), and Desert Schools Federal Credit Union, conveniently located on or close to campus. What do I need to open a bank account?
The documentation required varies according to the banking institutions and type of account being opened. Be sure to bring identification documents such as a passport or Arizona driver's license and a social security card. Please check with the bank about other requirements. (Go to top)

V - Visa
* All international students must attend the International Student Office (ISO) orientation session to learn about all the requirements for maintaining visa status, plus any additional orientation session required by your department.

What do I need to do to maintain my visa status?
In order to maintain visa status, international students in general need to comply with some simple but important regulations. Students need to be registered on SEVIS, must be considered full time students and inform any address change. There are also regulations pertaining to travel outside the U.S. and employment. Please contact the International Student Office (ISO) for detailed information and read the ISO periodic updates sent via email to all international students. (Go to top)
What are the credit requirements to maintain my status?
International graduate students, including CONACYT students, need to be considered full-time. This means that students need to be enrolled in at least nine credit hours per semester, or six credit hours in case of an assistantship (TA/RA). (Go to top)
Can I travel outside the U.S.?
Yes, however, students should be aware that the DS-2019 form needs to be endorsed at ISO prior to the trip and the visa needs to be valid for reentry. Please contact the International Student Office (ISO) for more detailed information. (Go to top)
Can I bring my family?
Yes. The students' family can enter the U.S. on an F2 visa, as the F1 holder’s dependants. The mandatory health insurance is also applicable to all family members. (Go to top)
Why does the International Student Office charge a $25 fee?
ISO charges all international students a $25 fee that corresponds to the SEVIS system services and visa support for students. (Go to top)

VI - Employment

Do I need to pay U.S. taxes?
International students with any American source of income, such as RA/TA position or on campus hourly job, do need to file taxes in the U.S. For more information on taxes, please consult with the law school Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. (Go to top)
Can I take a graduate assistantship position?
CONACYT fellows can accept TA/RA position at anytime during their program's first three years with no impact to the CONACYT monthly stipend. However, according to the ASU/CONACYT agreement, ASU will pick up the scholarship’s cost for the remaining two years though assistantship positions, and CONACYT will cease the stipend. Students should be aware of this and plan accordingly. (Go to top)
Can I work?

How can I send my report of activities?
CONACYT students are required to send a report of activities at the end of every semester. Please follow the guidelines established by CONACYT to fulfill this requirement. (Go to top)
Will CONACYT cover classes taken during summer or winter sessions?
CONACYT will cover classes taken during summer or winter sessions as long as they are part of the student's program of study. Interested students should submit a request to CONACYT three months prior to session start. CONACYT will evaluate each candidate request based on their criteria and will decide independently. IX - Safety

What is the ASU Safety Escort Service? How and when can I use it?
The Safety Escort Service ensures students, faculty members and staff a safer alternative than walking alone to campus parking lots, structures and residence halls, utilizing the idea of the "buddy system.” In the form of a golf cart, the Safety Escort Service will provide an escort for free from any on-campus location to another throughout the evening. What should I know about biking to campus?
If you are planning to ride a bike to campus, please be aware that bicyclists are required by law to:
  • Ride with the flow of traffic while on the street or sidewalk.
  • Yield to traffic before entering the street from a sidewalk.
  • Obey all traffic control signals including red lights and stop signs.
  • Use a headlight and a rear reflector at night.
