MSHP News
Summer 2007 was an exciting and successful one for the participants of the Math-Science Honors Program (MSHP). MSHP celebrated its 22st summer on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University. Students who love math and science and excel in these subjects had the opportunity to spend five or eight weeks in residence at ASU this summer learning about advanced mathematics such as calculus with analytical geometry, mathematical biology, and much more. MSHP accepted 100 high school students this past summer. Together, this year’s class was comprised of an ethnically and culturally diverse group, with females accounting for more than half of the participants. 35% of the students were returning participants, attending MSHP one or more summers.
The MTBI/SUMS Institute’s Math-Science Honors Program is proud to announce that 35 MSHP alumni were accepted as incoming freshman at ASU in the fall of 2007.The Math-Science Honors Program would not be possible if it were not for the support of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics along with the following MTBI/SUMS associated faculty members: Dr. John McDonald, Dr. Carlos Castillo-Chavez, Jay Abramson, Dr. Sergei Suslov, Paul Vaz. We appreciate the assistance of the ASU Department of Mathematics, the Office of the Provost, Arizona State University, and the community in ensuring that MSHP continues to be a driving force in the recruitment and retention of students from underrepresented groups in the mathematical sciences.
