• The 10 volumes in this series provide in-depth articles on various aspects of world music. Each article provides a bibliography and audio-visual resources. The tenth volume contains a general glossary, a general index, and bibliographic references, discography, and filmography for each geographic area. Each volume comes with an accompanying CD.

• This book examines instruments by classification (aerophones, idiophones, membranophones, and chordophones). Particular helpful to ethnomusicologist is the chapter entitled "Instruments around the World," which provides illustrations and names of common instruments from the world's geographic areas. This book enables one to see illustrations of instruments that they may hear on world music recordings.

• Although not specific to ethnomusicology, it containing 1,327 articles on world music, 805 on regional music, countries and cities, New Grove provides excellent bibliographies and general overviews. If researching the music of a specific region, this is a great resource to start with. It is also available online through Arizona State University Library system. The first edition is also available, and includes many articles with somewhat different information and approaches to the topics.

• This atlas provides detailed maps from around the world. Although somewhat out of date, it still provides valuable information on cities and geographic features.

A number of areas, including jazz, the sociology and psychology of music, and computers in music research are included. Dissertations available through University Microfilm include the annual volume and page number from their "Dissertation Abstracts."

• Published in South Africa, this is the journal of the International Library of African Music. Articles cover all aspects of African music. Reviews of books, audio recordings, and videos appear in each edition. The back page of every edition shows a map of Africa which indicates where geographically the origins of each article. The library possesses copies from 1954 - 1999.

• This is the journal of the Society for Asian Music. It is published twice a year and contains in-depth articles on various topics. Reviews of books, audio recordings, and video recordings also appear in each edition.

The World of Music

• Published out of the University of Bamberg in Germany, this journal provides a European perspective on ethnomusicology. It is published three times a year and provides in-depth articles and reviews of books and recordings. Each edition is generally thematic.

Yearbook for Traditional Music

Ethnomusicology OnLine.

• Ethnomusicology Online is an online peer-reviewed multimedia web journal. "Issues" are put out annually. Although several articles exist, this journal consists primarily of reviews of books, compact discs, software, and web sites. The review indices are searchable by author, geographical region, or by map.

Indiana University's William and Gayle Cook Music Library Ethnomusicology Resources.

• This site connects 109 links to various world-music retailers, institutions, guides, and personal web pages. The sites are grouped by region or lumped into the "Ethnomusicology Resources" category. The links provide a good starting place for exploring ethnomusicology on the internet.

International Index to Music Periodicals, Full Text Edition (IIMP).

• This database accesses over 370 international music periodicals for more than 20 countries, with 60 full text titles. All full text records provide an abstract. Obituaries and feature music articles from the New York Times and The Washington Post are available.

Music Index Online.

• This database provides music coverage of journal articles, book reviews, reviews of music recordings, first performances, and obituaries. The dates range from 1979 to 1998 and it is updated quarterly. Over 640 international music periodicals are covered.

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature (Repertorie International de Litterature Musicale).

• This database indexes music literature from conference proceedings, books, articles, dissertations, festschriften, catalogues, and bibliographies. Coverage is from 1969 to present, with an international geographic scope.

University of Washington's Ethnomusicology, Folk Music, and World Music Links.

• This site contains links to organizations, institutions, periodicals, recording labels and distributors, and sites organized by geographic regions. The amount of material available through this site is enormous. It is an excellent place to start an online search.
