Gives a good overview of women in Arizona as voters, candidates and office holders from territorial times to the date of the Town Hall.  Some statistical information and names of women active in Arizona politics are included. Martin, Mart.


2. The Almanac of Women and Minorities in American
Politics. Boulder, CO; Oxford: Westview Press, 1999.

Chronology sections include women in the U.S. House of Representatives, state legislatures and judiciary. Brief State-by-state milestones for women and minorities. Information on prominent women such as Sandra Day O’Connor and Jane Dee Hull.

West Ref also has 2001 edition.

Listing of women holding elected offices in federal, state, county and city government and political parties for the year of publication.  Minimal information of name, political party and address given for each woman.  Biographical information is given for women elected to the U.S. Congress.

Profiles of 226 American women managers, administrators and leaders (some from Arizona).  Arranged alphabetically, most include a bibliography of works about and/or by the subject.  Includes a list of women who were “firsts” in a variety of areas and a general bibliography on women in business, education and government.

Brief biographical sketches of prominent and lesser-known Arizona personalities.  Most entries give one or more sources for more information on the person.  A few women active in politics are included.

Published biennially in two volumes, the Arizona section is in volume one.  Names are listed alphabetically.  Gives brief biographical information on individuals participating in politics at local, state or national levels, or have been politically active in the recent past.

Alphabetically arranged, brief to lengthy biographical sketches. International in scope, indexed by country, with title or affiliation for each woman (some Arizona women).  Includes a statistical survey of women in politics and a map showing the percentage of women in national legislatures worldwide.

A biographical directory of women holding public office in   the U.S. during 1974.  Organized by state, then listed by level of office from U.S. Congress to state commissions.  Provides very brief biographical information on some women, more on others.  Includes alphabetical index, statistical information of women in U.S. politics and a bibliography of women and government.

Biographical directory of women serving in local, state and federal government in 1977.  Updates earlier title (entry 15).  Organized by state, with a separate section on federal offices.  Both are useful tools for obtaining names and limited information on Arizona women active in politics in the 1970’s.


INDEXES


A card index to the Arizona Republic is available in the Department of Archives and Manuscripts on the 4th floor of Hayden Library, it covers material indexed between 1912 and 1987. See department staff for more information.


BOOKS AND OTHER MATERIALS


For additional material, search online in the ASU Libraries Catalog using keywords Arizona and women and politics or Library of Congress subject headings: women in politics --Arizona, women politicians—Arizona, Arizona–Politics and government, or Women legislators–Arizona. Other search terms could include specific organizations, events or names.

Government publications may be helpful. One source for Arizona Government websites with current information is under Resources, Government Documents Service, State of Arizona Documents, and Internet resources with direct links to various Arizona Government websites. USEFUL DATABASES


Begin a search in online databases by selecting “Articles” in the “FIND” section on the Library home page, and then select subject Arizona/Southwest Studies.  Several of these databases may be useful for research on women in Arizona politics.  Some useful search terms could include; women and politics or organization names or events. Individual names such as Sandra Day O’Connor, Rose Mofford, Polly Rosenbaum, etc. can also be searched. 


Other useful subject areas are Biography, Gender Studies, History, Government Publications, History, Political Science, Primary Sources, Social Sciences and Womens Studies.  Search in newspaper indexes, NewsBank Full-Text Newspapers and LexisNexis Academic, for more famous women such as Sandra Day O’Connor. New databases are added to our online catalog periodically; consult staff at the Hayden Reference desk and the Department of Archives and Manuscripts for ideas and assistance.


CD News: the Arizona Republic, Arizona Business Gazette covers prominent Arizona newspapers 1987-.  This index is available on ASU library user workstations only. It can be accessed from the index page http://www.asu.edu/lib/resources/db/cdnewsaz.htm


(1987+) Includes full text of articles, editorials, notices, and obituaries from the Arizona Republic, the Phoenix Gazette, and ABG (Arizona Business Gazette).

OTHER UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES SOURCES


Of particular interest are the Arizona Women in Politics Archives in the Department of Archives and Special Collections and the records of Planned Parenthood of Central and Northern Arizona in the Arizona Historical Foundation. Of potential use are the specialized databases available in the Department of Archives and Special Collections, including the Hayden Papers database, Manuscripts and Special Collections database and Southwestern Autobiography database. See staff for assistance with these databases. The Department of Archives and Special Collections and the Arizona Historical Foundation are located on the 4th floor of Hayden Library.
