Checklist of Children’s Plays in English
Printed Between 1856-1919

Compiled by Jonathan F. Levy, Distinguished Teaching Professor, SUNY Stony Brook and Floraine Kay,

INTRODUCTION

This Checklist of Children's Plays written in English between 1856 and 1919 is meant to offer scholars in the field a point of departure in their studies. Although this list contains over 500 plays, we know that there are more in existence. The plan is to add new plays as they are identified and verified.

Most of these entries will include a list of libraries and collections in which they may be found. However, some of the titles were discovered by checking secondary sources, such as antiquarian book catalogues, bibliographies and the like. In the case of the latter, existent copies of the plays were not personally examined before they were added to the checklist.

Some of the items on this list have annotations; some include questions about the text. We would appreciate hearing from you if you have answers to these questions. We also invite you to submit the names and bibliographic information about plays not on this list. Since we have not personally seen many of the items on this list, we also welcome any suggestions for play citation revisions, realized after examining print copies.

Please contact Katherine Krzys, Curator of the Child Drama Collection, Department of Archives and Special Collections, Arizona State University Libraries, mailto:kathy.krzys@asu.edu with new titles, revisions to this list or annotations. To learn more about the Jonathan Levy and Child Drama Collections, see the Child Drama Collection LibGuide.
