Get It! is a new library service that provides direct links from a citation in a database to online full-text of an article (when available), provides a link to search in the online catalog to see if ASU owns other formats of the publication, and allows users to request an item via Interlibrary Loan if the print or electronic version is not available.
"Get It! @ ASU" is a new library service that provides links from a citation in a database to:
- The electronic full-text of an article (when available),
- The ASU Libraries' Online Catalog to see if ASU owns other formats (print, microfilm, etc.) of the publication,
- Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery services to request an item the ASU Libraries do not have,
- Export the citation directly to your RefWorks account,
- Create a stable URL for the citation to include in your bibliography or reading list,
- Format the citation in MLA, APA, CBE or Chicago style,
- Check Ulrich's Periodicals Directory to see if the journal is refereed, and
- Connect with our Ask A Librarian service if you need assistance.
Everyone! When on-campus, "Get It! @ ASU" is available to all users. However, from off-campus, this service is restricted to ASU students, staff and faculty who will need to input their ASUrite ID and password.
Can I use "Get It! @ ASU" from off campus?
Yes. If you have accessed a resource via the ASU Libraries' web site, "Get It! @ ASU" will appear just as if you were on campus.
There are two possible causes:
- Some databases do not support the "Get It! @ ASU" service or are not yet "activated".
- Another possibility is that you have JavaScript disabled in your browser. If it's turned off, the buttons will not appear. Re-enable JavaScript and try again. .
I clicked on "Get It! @ ASU", but the menu doesn't appear. What's wrong?
You may be using a "pop-up" blocker program on your computer such as the Google Toolbar's pop-up blocker, Pop-Up Killer or Pop-Up Starter, or have 'unrequested pop-ups' disabled in your browser. You will need to turn off or disable the program to use "Get It! @ ASU", or you can set it to accept pop-ups from that site.
Please note: this is a known problem with Web of Science (Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, Arts and Humanities Citation Index).
I clicked on Get It! and it worked once, but the next time I tried it, nothing happened. Why?
The Get It! menu for each article comes up in the same browser window. If you switch windows to go back to the database, the Get It! menu goes into the background. Choose it from the tabs at the bottom of your screen to make it come forward.
Why are there multiple windows?
When you click on "Get It! @ ASU", a menu window is generated, listing all the services available for that item. When you select one of those services, a third window is generated that will contain the resource you requested. Normally only three windows will be open: the database you were using, the "Get It! @ ASU" menu, and the resource you are accessing. In some cases, the resource you are accessing may generate more windows.
How can I find "Get It! @ ASU" in a particular database or resource?
The location of "Get It! @ ASU" varies. The ASU Libraries subscribe to databases and resources from many different vendors; it is the vendor who chooses where to place the logo. Consequently, we have designed our button with bright colors to increase its visibility.
Why don't I see "Get It! @ ASU" in PubMed?
Some databases do not support the "Get It! @ ASU" service or are not yet "activated." We are currently working on activating PubMed.
Why doesn't "Get It! @ ASU" online availability option always take me directly to the article?
In some cases the database you are using does not send enough information to "Get It! @ ASU" to get directly to the article; this may happen even if the database displays all the necessary information. In other cases, the resource you are trying to reach may not support direct access to the article. When "Get It! @ ASU" does not take you directly to the article it will get you as close as possible. When faced with this situation:
- Use the table of contents or the browse feature for a journal title and navigate to specific issue and article.
- If you are taken to another database, such as is the case with journals embedded within the LexisNexis Academic database, use the databases search feature to locate the article; try using keywords from the title of the article, the year of the article, and/or the journal title. If you need help, Ask a Librarian.
Why is there sometimes no RefWorks option on the Get It! menu?
Sometimes the database does not provide the information needed by RefWorks. Usually this means the citation is missing a volume or issue number.
Can I connect to Get It! via RefWorks to see if ASU has the online full-text?
Yes, ASU has enabled RefWorks to show the “Get It! @ ASU" link for the citations in your RefWorks databases. Please note:
- The Get It! Link will lead to full text (or options for obtaining full text) if your citation refers to an article in a journal, conference proceeding, or a book.
- If your citation refers to an e-print resource (such as an article at arXiv.org) or a general Web site, Get It! Will not be able to locate your item; for such resources, you should record the URL of the item you have cited and connect to it via that URL instead.
Why are there two or more options for online availability?
Normally, we subscribe to online access from the publisher, and that's usually the only link. In some cases, an intermediary full-text provider, called an "aggregator", has the journal available as well, and an article may also be embedded within a database. "Get It! @ ASU" gives you all the available ways to access an item, just in case one or more providers are offline.
Why do I sometimes get a "bad URL", an "Error 404", or some other "not found" message?
"Get It! @ ASU" is a work in progress. Links are generated on the fly according to algorithms. The links are composed of what is known about the needed item and could include such information as the journal's title, its international standard serial number (ISSN), the article's title and author, and/or the digital object identifier (DOI). Sometimes the database sends incorrect information to "Get It! @ ASU"; sometimes the publisher or vendor of the needed item has changed it's web site and "Get It! @ ASU" doesn't know the new address. There could be many reasons why a link from "Get It! @ ASU" fails.
It is important to report these instances to the ASU Libraries' Systems Support. Please include:
- the database or resource you were using,
- the citation (author, title, journal, volume, page, date) of the item you wanted, and
- which link on the "Get It! @ ASU" menu failed.
