Tips:
  • A complete list of the 1,927 pioneer biographical research files can be viewed by searching for the keywords HAY BIO in the Arizona and Southwest Index. A browse list is also available for viewing. The Carl Hayden Papers also contain a substantial quantity of raw research materials on territorial Arizona that may have been used in the production of the biographies but were kept separately from the Pioneer Biographical Files.
  • The original Hayden Pioneer Biographies were scanned using Adobe Capture® software to enable document image presentation and manipulation. Users accessing this web page through the ASU Libraries web site will automatically invoke the Adobe Acrobat® viewer when they click on an individiual biography. The version of Adobe Acrobat® currently available throught the ASU Libraries Catalog includes image zooming and framing functionalities that enhance legibility, as some of the original carbon typescripts resulted in poor resolution scans. Researchers acessing this information from outside the University Libraries will need the Adobe Acrobat® viewer, which can be downloaded free from Adobe. Remote researchers may also experience significant delays in downloading biographical texts due to large files sizes and the slow transmission speeds of standard telephone lines. Future enhancements to this site may include links from Arizona and Southwest Index entries and searching functionalities that will enable full text searching across all of the biographical essays.
