  • Encyclopedia of Life Sciences has three different categories which indicate the level of complexity of each article:
    • Introductory articles: From launch ELS will include over 1,300 introductory level articles which are useful for undergraduates and non-specialist readers needing basic concepts in a given subject.
    • Secondary articles: From launch ELS will include over 1,800 secondary level articles which are useful for advanced undergraduates and graduates with material equivalent to graduate level texts.
    • Special Essay: ELS will include a number of special essay articles which will cover "hot topics" and controversial issues written by the world’s most eminent scientists.
