Displaying or Searching non-Roman characters in the ASU Library Catalog

Many of the records in the ASU Library catalog contain information in non-English languages and scripts. These include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Hebrew. You may search the romanized versions of these records, and have the results display in the native language. Additionally, you may also search and view the records in their native scripts if you are using Internet Explorer 5.5 or above and have installed the Microsoft IME language package.
Instructions:
You must have a browser enabled for Unicode to view these character sets. Follow the instructions for your browser (below).
Internet Explorer 5.5 or above
- From the top menu on the browser, select "View," then "Encoding," then "More," and finally "Unicode (UTF-8)".
- If your machine does not have the font, Internet Explorer will automatically download the font from Microsoft.
- To reset your fonts after use follow step 1, but select "Western European (Windows)" instead of "Unicode."
Netscape 6 or above
- From the main menu, select View -- Encoding (Character coding in Netscape 6)
- select UTF-8 (UNICODE)
- Download an appropriate font: For Windows machines, the following fonts will display most non-Roman characters in the UW library catalog correctly:
Unicode fonts:
- Enter the name of your font under "Variable Length Font."
Important Notes:
- If you see boxes instead of characters when you display the catalog record, this means that the language/font preferences have not been set correctly for your browser.
