General Style Manuals
Style manuals show how to format bibliographies and footnotes; some also provide information on outlining, editing and writing. If your instructor has not specified a particular format or recommended a style manual, consult one of the following, widely-used manuals.
These four general style manuals are used in some sci/tech publications and disciplines and may also be used in student papers.
ASU graduate students may want to also consult the ASU Graduate College Format Manual.

Style Manuals for Specific Sci/Tech Disciplines
Some style manuals are developed for specific subject areas or publications. Also, many journals and societies publish "instructions for authors" as guides for individuals submitting papers for publication. These guides vary greatly and could include everything from the size of margins to the use of correct nomenclature. Information that may be of use for student papers would be how to cite references, how to format the paper, and writing tips.
Some of the following "styles" promote a shortened form of bibliographic citation that may not be acceptable to some instructors. Students are advised to check with their instructors before selecting one of these guides.
