Young's Modulus

  • Definition: Young's modulus is a measure of elasticity (or conversely, stiffness) of a solid substance such as a metal, polymer, ceramic, or glass. Materials have an elastic limit beyond which the item can no longer recover from the stresses and therefore some deformation will remain. Young's modulus is the ration of stress vs. strain or E=stress/strain within a materials's elastic limit. Beyond the elastic limit, other forces come into play.

  • Units: Pascal (Pa), pounds per square inch (psi)

    • Primarily found in resources about materials; may also appear in some phsyics and engineering resources.
    • Young's modulus is also the linear portion of a stress-strain curve when measuring the tensile strength of a material. Tension refers to pulling strength and is the opposite of compression. So also consider looking for tension/tensile strength, compression, deformation and stress-strain curves.
