Half-Life

  • Definition: The time needed to reduce a sample to 50% of it's original amount.

      Half-life is the time needed to reduce an unstable element's radioactive intensity by 50%. The activity could be alpha, beta, or gamma radiation.
      • Other Terminology: Unstable elements may also be described as isotopes, radioisotopes, nuclides or radionuclides..
      • Resources:
    • Biological and Pharmaceutical
      The time needed to eliminate 50% of a substance (drug, enzyme, protein, pharmaceutical, etc.) from the body; usually concerned with concentration in blood, plasma, serum, and/or urine.
      • Other Teminology: pharmacokinetics or absorption, fate in the body, elimination, especially if the fate does not need to be measured in 50% increments.

      The time needed to reduce a substance in the environment to 50% if its original amount. Environmental half-life is specific to the type of environment (air, soil, water, plant, or animal), and can be effected by environmental conditions (temperature, pH, depth within the soil or water, etc.) as well as the substance's inherent properties (solubility in water, volatility in air, chemical reactivity with other substances, etc.)
      • Other Terminology: Half-life in water may be referred to as hydrolysis half-life, and half-life in air may be referred to as photolysis half-life or photo-oxidation half life. May be listed with the substance's properties or under environmental fate/residual activity paragraphs.
