Instructions for Finding:
Synthesis of A Compound
Review Articles
Named Reaction

 

How to Find the Synthesis of a Compound in the Merck Index

 

Search Strategy:
  1. Click on the Merck Index link above and then click on the underlined title.

  2. Within the Compound Search box, click on Search Compound Monographs (no ChemDraw plugin).

  3. In the All Names box, enter an equal sign immediately followed by the compound name (e.g. =aspartame).    If the search retrieves nothing, use the Full Text box and just enter the name (e.g. aspartame).

  4. In the search results menu click on the "Show Details" button for the appropriate compound.

  5. Look in the "Literature References" paragraph after "prepn" for references to synthesis information.  

  6. To print, use the browser's print command in the file menu.

How to Find Review Articles in the Merck Index

 

Search Strategy:
  1. Click on the Merck Index link above and then click on the underlined title.

  2. Within the Compound Search box, click on Search Compound Monographs (no ChemDraw plugin).

How to Find Information About a Named Reaction in the Merck Index

 

Search Strategy:
  1. Click on the Merck Index link above and then click on the underlined title.

  2. Within the Organic Name Reaction box, click on View the Organic Name Reactions Now link.

  3. In the left column, scroll through the frame to find your reaction and click on the name. 

  4. The information about the reaction will appear in the right frame.  

  5. To print the right frame, "right click" anywhere there is text in the frame, and select print from the menu.
