Finding Synthesis and Other Information

Instructions for using:
Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology
Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry

These encyclopedias contain extensive overviews of both compounds and topics. Articles are usually 20 or more pages in length and contain bibliographies. Look for information on history, preparation or manufacture, uses, and the corresponding literature references (located at the end of the article.) Some economic information may be given but this is frequently older data.

Search Strategy:

  1. Click on one of the Encyclopedias listed above.

  2. Click on the yellow SEARCH IN THIS TITLE link on the right side of the encyclopedia's home page .

  3. In the Kirk-Othmer change the Search All Text box to read Chemical Name; for Ullmann's keep the box at Search All Text.

  4. Fill in the search box with the common name of your compound and hit GO.

  5. The articles are ranked by relevance, so even if hundreds of answers are retrieved, the best article(s) for your compound will mostly likely be the first couple listed. Click on Section Text in HTML to get to the article .

  6. To find where the compound is located within the article, use the Web Browser's Find(on this page) feature on the Edit menu .

  7. Links are in blue. Blue numbers link to a separate page of references for the whole article; blue words link to the article on that subject.

  8. To print the article, use the browser's print button (make sure the correct frame is activated). Numbered figures can be seen and printed in larger format by clicking on the Full View link next to the figure. In Kirk-Othmer, numbered tables may be printed separately by clicking on the Tables link in the left frame.
