Patents
- To find a copy of a specific patent use:
- U.S. Patents
- US Patent and Trademark Office Patents Issues and Patent Application Databases
Covers 1790 to the present for issued patents. Patent applications from March 2001 - note: only patent applications for which the inventor has given permission for disclosure are contained within the patent application database. Requires a TIFF image viewer; instructions for obtaining a viewer are on the site. Patents can be retrieved by number, inventor, or words in the title.
- European Patent Office
Covers 1836 to the present for issued US patents. Patents can be retrieved by number from 1836 to the present and by inventor or words in the title from 1920 to the present.
- International Patents
- European Patent Office
Contains patent information from approximately 70 countries. Coverage varies by country, for details on coverage see below. Patents can be retrieved by number, inventor, or words in the title.
Coverage:
- Hate having to download patents one page at a time from the USPTO and EPO?
See the Invent Blog's
- To search for patents related to a specific compound use:
- Chemical Abstracts/SciFinder Scholar
Search by "Chemical Substance"; once the compound is found click on "Get References", then click on "Analyze/Refine" and "refine" by "Document Type" - "Patents".

Safety
- Chemical Safety Information - Glossary
- Chemical Warfare Agents (National Library of Medicine)
- Household Products Database (National Library of Medicine)
Find out what ingredients make up a product, the potential health effects, plus safety and handling.
- Haz-Map: Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Agents
Search database by type of agent (chemical), disease, job, adverse effects, and symptoms.
- Laboratory Survival Manual
- ToxMap: Environmental Health E-maps
An interactive web site that shows the amount and location of reported toxic chemicals released into the environment on maps of the United States. allows users to visually explore information about releases of toxic chemicals by industrial facilities around the United States as reported annually to the Environmental Protection Agency (http://www.epa.gov/tri/). It also integrates the map display with access to relevant bibliographic references and other data on these chemicals, providing a map-based portal to these resources. TOXMAP allows users to create nationwide or local area maps that show where chemicals are released into the air, water, and ground, and also provides region-specific links to chemical and bibliographic information. For more information see http://toxmap.nlm.nih.gov/toxmap/help/faq.jsp and http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/factsheets/toxmap.html
