Videos and DVD's may be checked out by all students and Community Card borrowers for 7 days. There is no grace period and no renewals. Recordings of ASU School of Music performances may only be checked out by Faculty and Staff for 30 days. They may not be checked out by any other patrons, but are available for use within the library.
Reserve Items have varying loan periods. The borrower will be notified of the date and time due at the time of checkout. Borrowers turning in late Reserve items will be charged $1.00 per item per hour late, up to $20.00.
Reference Books are non-circulating, but may be used within the library.
Current/Bound Periodicals are non-circulating, but may be used within the library.
Special Collections such as the Sheet Music, Wayne King Collection, and Christina Carroll Collection must be requested at the Circulation desk. They are non-circulating, but may be used within the library.
Date Due
At the time of loan, the borrower will be notified of the due date for each item. The borrower is responsible for meeting the due date. A courtesy overdue reminder will be sent, either by mail or email. Failure to receive an overdue reminder, for whatever reason, does not remove the responsibility of the borrower for meeting each due date. You can have your notices sent to your Internet address by contacting any library Circulation desk.
Overdues
For standard loan materials not returned or renewed within 30 days of the due date, the borrower is assessed a $10 overdue billing fee and a replacement charge. Only the replacement charge is cancelled when the item is returned. Once the fee has been paid, the item may be renewed.
A borrower with outstanding charges is denied borrowing privileges. Certain other University privileges may also be denied.
An appeals process is available. Appeals must be made within one year of billing. See the Billing Appeal Procedure for more information.
Recalls
Items which are checked out may be requested by other borrowers at any time. All items are subject to recall. This policy applies all year long: breaks, sabbaticals, vacations, etc. You will be notified of any recalls. Recall of an item may shorten the original loan period. Items not returned by the Recall Due Date will be assessed a $10.00 fee and a replacement charge for each item. Only the replacement charge will be cancelled when the item is returned. Recall late fines are strictly enforced.
Renewals
Items may be renewed as often as necessary unless recalled by another borrower. Items recalled by another borrower cannot be renewed. Renewals may be done at any ASU Library by bringing the items to Circulation. Renewals may also be processed over the phone (965- 2595) or over the Internet on the Library Network.
Community Card borrowers may make up to two (2) renewals for each item. Certain items, e.g., reserve, videos, are not renewable. Refer to the Telephone Renewal Policy for more information.
Requesting West Campus Materials
If the item is at the West campus, fill out a circulation request card and submit it to the Circulation Desk or request the item through the Library Online Catalog. Most items that are on the shelves are delivered to the Tempe campus within two business days. Requests for videos can be made at the Circulation desk and requests for journal articles are made through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Most materials from the West campus circulate for standard loan periods.
Proxy Cards
ASU faculty, staff, or students may authorize another person as a "proxy" to use their ASU ID for all library transactions. This allows the Proxy to use your ASU ID to check out library materials in your name. Proxies may be Teaching Assistants, spouses, family members, etc. Forms are available at any library Circulation desk.
A Proxy Card will be issued. For security purposes, the card will be sent to you, not to your Proxy. At the time of checkout, the proxy must present both the Proxy Card and his/her own photo ID.
Community Cards
The University Libraries are open to all users. An individual not affiliated with ASU who is an Arizona resident and meets certain age requirements, may borrow library items by purchasing a Community Card. Community Cards must be purchased at Hayden Library. There is a non-refundable annual fee of $100.00 for the basic community card. Borrowing privileges are not transferable. Refer to the Community Card Loan Policy for more information.

There are two quiet study rooms available by appointment in the Music Library. The Seminar Room is designed for large groups to meet within the Music Library without disturbing other patrons. The room has a table with seating for ten, VCR, DVD and Laserdisc players with a large monitor, a stereo system with turntable, cassette deck and CD player, a writing board, an electric piano and a library computer workstation with Internet access.
The Study Room is designed for small groups. It has a table and four chairs, and a VCR and DVD player with monitor.
Both rooms may be requested or reserved by anyone in person or by phone at the Circulation Desk on a first-come/first-serve basis.
The Music Library is equipped with three copy machines, a microform reader/printer, Uniprint machine, and a "cash to card" machine. The copy machines and the microform reader/printer accept change, one and five dollar bills, copy cards, and Sun Cards. The Uniprint machine, which allows patrons to print pages from the Library computer workstations, only accepts copy cards and Sun Cards. More money can be credited to copy cards at the "cash to card" machine. Copies range from 8 to 15 cents per copy. Patrons can email some Library Online Catalog information to themselves for free from any computer workstation. Inquire at the Circulation desk for help using any of these machines.
A computer workstation located within the Music Library has been provided by the Library's ADA Services Room for patrons with disabilities, and is equipped with adaptive technology. The ADA Services Room, located at Hayden Library, also provides a Library Express Service that sends requested books from various ASU Libraries to the ADA Services Room. For more information about ADA Services, see the ADA Room Web Site or inquire at the Circulation desk.
