Streaming Video FAQ

Streaming Video Information

Google Video Playback:
Please Consult the Google Video Support page and go to the "Playing Videos" section.

Quicktime Video Playback:
If you are viewing videos from home, you will need the Quick Time player to view them. (Files for home viewing are provided as a convenience only; better-quality video files are available for use at library workstations and campus computing sites.) Due to combinations of diverse hardware and software it is extremely difficult to diagnose all delivery problems and we are unable to support off campus tech support at this time. If you continually encounter difficulties with off-campus viewing please have an independent technician verify your problem.

You will need to provide YOUR OWN headphones to listen to your video if you are using a public workstation on campus.

Streaming video files are for viewing only; they are not downloadable. Please refer back to individual program to see if a link is provided for a downloadable version. In many cases there is only a streaming copy.

Frequently Asked Questions about Library Streaming Video

Q. Why didn't the video start?
A. Many of our video are now being streamed via Google Video. If you experience problems with that service please consult their support page. For videos streamed via Quicktime, you may need to install or upgrade to the latest version of Quicktime (older versions will not work) or you may have selected the wrong video type for your computer/internet connection. If you have checked these issues and still have problems, there may have been a transmission error.

Q. Why is there bad sound, or no audio at all?
A. Make sure your headphones are plugged in. Make sure your volume is turned up. If the problem began in the studio (e.g., if your hear a buzzing while the someone talks), this may be a microphone problem that cannot be fixed.

If the soundtrack seems garbled, you might have a problem with the soundcard on your computer.

Quicktime Audio - For a possible solution in QuickTime, go to the Edit menu, select Preferences, then click on QuickTime Preferences. Change the window from "About QuickTime" to "Sound Out." In the "Choose a Device for Playback" window, change the setting from your soundcard/system (e.g., DirectSound, etc.) to "waveOut: Windows' preferred device."

Also, longer videos may loose sync over time. This is a "bug" inherent to older Quicktime streaming media and is normal. We are working on a solution to this problem.

Q. What if my home firewall or cable provider's firewall prevents me from viewing videos at home or work?
A. You may be having network or software problems outside of our control which are slowing down your ability to receive data and thus returing an error. Have an independent technician verify your problem. We are unable to support off campus tech support at this time because combinations of diverse hardware and software make it extremely difficult to diagnose delivery problems.

Q. How long will these videos remain online?
A. Library Channel videos have no specific end date, however, they may be removed at any time or moved to a new location.

Q. Can I download video?
A. Yes, many of our videos are available for download. Check our Podcast section for the specific video you are looking for or search Google video. If you are unable to find a downloadable version of the streaming video it is not available.
