SCOPE AND CONTENTS: President Truman appointed General Marshall a special envoy to China with instructions to arrange a cease-fire agreement between Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist troops and Chinese Communist forces. General Marshall returned to become Secretary of State without having reached a solution to the conflict. These papers are sources for studying the Chinese political and military situation following World War II, as well as U. S. policy during this period. Contains minutes of Marshall's meetings with Chiang Kai-shek, Chou En-Lai and other leaders and reports and memoranda prepared for Marshall by U. S. diplomatic personnel. Reveals American perceptions of events in China and provides insights into the failure of postwar U. S. policy there. In addition to studies in political, social and economic history, there is a large section of titles on art, archaeology, church history and liturgy, as well as canon and civil law.
