The A&HCI indexes the citations of authors, articles, and works of art that occur in about 1150 art and humanities publications, selections fron 7000 scientific and social science journals and other publications. The scope of disiplines covered is broad and includes: archaeology, architecture, art, Asian studies, classics, dance, folklore, history, language, linguistics, literary reviews, music, philosophy, poetry, radio, television, film, religion, and theater. The online version of the A&HCI covers citations back to 1982 while the print version goes back to 1975.

The print version of the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals is the most comprehensive index of articles concerned with various aspects of architecture in Western languages. This resource was begun in 1934 and indexes some periodicals from their inception in the late nineteenth century. Allied areas of interest include: archaeology, interior design, decorative arts, housing, city planning, landscape design and gardens. It is an important resource for information concerning articles on artworks associated with architectural monuments that are an intregral part of a building such as relief sculpture, murals, and mosaics.
This is the Print version of the The BHA. It indexes and abstracts writings on European and American art. The coverage is broad, covering "...more than 2000 periodicals published in 47 languages, as well as books, exhibition catalogs, conference proceedings, and bibliographies. All aspects of Western art are covered, including the traditional fine arts, decorative and applied arts, industrial design and architecture, popular and folk art, photography, performance art, and aspects of material culture of interest to art historians" This information is from a brochure provided by The Getty Information Institute which presently publishes this bibliographic utility in conjunction with the Center National de la Recherche Scientifique. The publication of BHA was began in 1991 after the merger of the International Repertory of the Literature of Art (RILA) and Repertoire d'Art et d'Archeologie (RAA) in 1989.
RILA is a predecessor of BHA was sponsored by various organizations including the College Art Association of America and the Getty Art History Information Program. RILA was published from 1975 to 1989.
RAA published their indexes of art materials from 1910 till the merger with RILA in 1989 to become BHA. It is an extremely important bibliographic source for Western Art writings before 1989.
Subject Index to articles from 1907 to 1960. First Supplement covers articles from 1961 to October, 1974. Covers about 350 sources emphasizing 19th and 20th century painting, decorative art, Oriental art, and Chicago architecture.
Author-subject index to 27 periodicals from 1923-1969. Focuses on Western European and American painting, drawing, sculpture, and decorative art.
